GameStop Controls 21% of US Retail Videogame Market, Report Estimates

A new report by Gamasutra estimates that GameStop controls around 21 percent of the US videogame retail market.

The study only accounts for hardware and software sales, and does not break down the 79% competitor figure to show whether GameStop is far in the lead over retail rivals such as Wal-Mart.

However, the data does show that GameStop's market share in countries outside of the US is ramping up quickly. The retailer grew 67 percent in Europe over its last fiscal year.

In the realm of strange factoids, the report also shows that Delaware has the highest concentration of GameStop stores of any state, at 2.18 stores per 100,000 citizens.

  • Gamestop is fine for shopping for console games. However, the PC games section is near nonexistant, and is always in the back corner with very few games, mostly from EA. If you shop for PC games, look elsewhere, you're not the crowd they're catering to.

Also, I very much dislike their business practices. The most recent one being what they did to Demigod and releasing it a week ahead of the street date and allowing mass piracy to ensue, and clogging up the servers before they were ready. The guys at Stardock had to work over their holiday weekend to get things sorted out because of what had happened, and also got lower review ratings because of the clogged servers caused by...Gamestop's early release.

I can't say that I approve of them allowing their store workers to take out the games and play them, then put them back and selling them as "new."

One thing Gamestop almost never does is a sale. They are usually the last ones to drop the price of a game, and where I live, there's a really high sales tax, so I usually purchase from newegg, best buy, impulse or steam depending on the price. Best buy has game sales a lot of the time, but I don't think I've seen one on a PC game I purchase from them.

Gamestop may be all and well for a lot of people, but I simply do not believe they are even trying to cater to me.
