  • GeForce owners who always post on _any_ 3dfx news must be some of the most insecure bunch of low-brow unknowledgeable idiots I've ever come across. What drives you people to diss 3dfx news? Maturity check! You don't see me posting on degrading unsubstantiated opinions on nVidia, ATI or Matrox news. Do I *hate* any of those companies? Nope. At least I haven't seen any v5=Daikatana crap. Then again, I haven't scrolled down all the way yet. But do you see me running my mouth off about how features I haven't seen for myself suck? Sheesh.

  • IMO the only use for AA is if you have a shitty monitor.

Playing in 640x480 with FSAA is a small but noticeable step up from no AA. However it's still blurry and the textures still look like crap because the screen is still in 640x480!

And if you have some big p1mping monitor, are you going to play in 1024x768 with FSAA? fUck no, you're going to play in 1600x1200 you bastard!

So yeah if you're playing something like Q1 or Q2 on a monitor that's limited to 1024 then AA will be a nice touch. But real resolution, just like real frames per second, will always win.

And just so people don't think I'm taking sides... you know if v5s have killer fill rate you CAN get that real resolution on them. I'm just recommending that... IMHO of course.

  • I'd like to try a v5500 but this close to release and STILL no reference boards out for review. I think they're just afraid all the reviews will say " eh, it's ok, it's a little faster, it looks ok visually" and that would kill their sales. If they dont release any to reviewers, they will sell a SHITLOAD of them the first day (we all know lots of people will jump on them sight unseen), and even if the reviews are bad, people wont get to see a review till 3 months later in paper magazines and at least a week later in online magazines. By then, they will have sold a crapload to early apodters and of course the reviews will have no effects on people who buy things because of the name. I bought a rendition v1000 when it was the baddest thing out there. I bought a voodoo1 when it was, a rendition 2x00 , then a voodoo2, kept the voodoo2 (with a matrox g200 main card) until the day the voodoo3's hit the shelves. Was extremely happy with the voodoo3 until i could get my hands on a geforce DDR and am extremely happy with it. I'm an early adopter myself and have always been happy with 3dfx stuff BUT I AM NOT buying a v5500 until I see a crapload of reviews saying its "da shit" AND that its 32-bit color looks good. I have YET to see a 32-bit color screenshot from a VSA chip board unless those crappy looking screens shown so far are 32-bit, they sure as hell dont look it. I just fired Homeworld up again to be sure and those Homeworld FSAA shots are nowhere near as good-looking (colorwise) as my geforce.

  • In answer to the graphics and gameplay issue, where do you get that not having huge textures is "crap graphics"? we all know these cards arent going to keep up with technology more than a year anymore, the game companies and videocard/cpu makers are scratching each others back with regards to better hardware/new features in software that require the new hardware. So what if the v5500 cant run that ONE level at max detail without a fps drop? by the time EVERY game has texture use like that we'll all be talking shit about the rampage2, not the v5.
