I wonder how many games actually have the main character with amnesia. Seems like lazy writing to me.

If everything's unfurled well by the end of the game then it's more just a narrative device than lazy writing. It works well for mysteries (like this one) as it places the viewer in the same situation as the protagonist. We know only as much as they do, and so are drawn in to journey with them through the plot. Some great stories have been told this way, like Dark City.
