When your protagonist comes back from the dead with no recollection of how he or she got that way, it's generally a safe bet that something, how to say, sinister, is going down.

For those that can't wait until Radical's Prototype (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) arrives on June 9, this trailer should help sate your curiosity about what's going on in the super-powered open-world game. But does it reveal too much, or just enough? Only time will tell...

I wonder how many games actually have the main character with amnesia. Seems like lazy writing to me.

One of the best game stories ever, Planescape: Torment, started the main character off with amnesia. Worked like a charm.

I agree. What I meant it seems pretty overdone nowadays.

          Oh, I see.

Well, perhaps. Guess we'll wait and see with this one.

It tends to work well in games because it allows for plausible moments of explanation/tutorial/etc without you wondering "Shouldn't the character already know all of this?"

If everything's unfurled well by the end of the game then it's more just a narrative device than lazy writing. It works well for mysteries (like this one) as it places the viewer in the same situation as the protagonist. We know only as much as they do, and so are drawn in to journey with them through the plot. Some great stories have been told this way, like Dark City.
