DICE Defends Later PC Release of Battlefield 1943, Could Up Player Count and Drop Regeneration

by Chris Faylor, Apr 27, 2009 11:31am PDT

Following last week's revelation that the download-only Battlefield 1943 would hit consoles a few months before PC, developer DICE has spoken out to make sure that everyone knows "this is in no means an intentional ploy to punish our PC fans."

"You might feel disappointed about the PC release being in September rather than June, but you should be very happy to know this is to give us the proper development time to create a proper PC version of Battlefield 1943 and not a console port," producer Gordon Van Dyke wrote of the $15 download, as noticed by Blue's News.

"We want to make the best damn PC version we can for our PC fans," he continued. "This will be first PC game ever released using Frostbite! PCs are an open platform requiring additional features, support, technical consideration, and can't just be thrown out there using copy/paste. We have thought very carefully about this decision and in the long run felt it was the right choice even though we knew we'd catch some flak for it."

Meanwhile, Planet Battlefield notes that a PCGamer.se preview suggested that the PC release could up the player count beyond the 24-person limit of the console editions, and might pack "alternatives" to unlimited ammo and regenerating health.

  • As the old saying goes, please "don't piss down my back and tell me its raining".

While I'm sure DICE will change a few of the game aspects of 1943, the reason for the delay is the same for every other cross-platform title (ie; Red Faction Guerrilla is a recent example), the marketing suits firmly beleive that the PC version "cannibalizes" the all important console sku. Some publishers admit to the practice, others, like EA, try to sugar coat things by implying that they somehow have special plans to benefit the PC consumer and it will take more time.

I'll be buying the game either way but I'm not buying into the line of bullshit about needing more development time.
