Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Apr 27, 2009 5:00am PDTOh, hello there Monday. You kinda snuck up on me there. I trust you're doing well?
And with some interesting news already popping up, that bodes pretty well for the rest of the day, and hopefully, the week. Glad to see that A2M managed to get WET with a new publisher, and curious to see what will happen with Six Days in Fallujah now.

My office gets a bunch of magazine subscriptions and there are a couple scuba ones in there - the mail guys knows I'm a diver so he puts them on my desk whenever they come in.
As much as I appreciate the free mags, it's like torture every time I see one. Sometimes I think I should just live like a hermit and eat bologna and ramen 5 days a week so that I could afford to scuba dive four times a year.
Anyone else here a diver?

So, I don't know how to cook. But I really want to do it more. Here's the problem though: I hate everything except for the cooking. I hate having to go buy the ingredients. I hate having to get all of the shit out from the cupboards, I hate having a pile of dirty shit when it's all done to clean up. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I'm wondering if anyone has any secrets for mitigating as much of that crap as possible? I can think of things like making sure the dishwasher has plenty of room in it before I start, that way I can just move dirty stuff there as soon as I'm done with it, but any other protips? I am looking for some magic products I can buy that makes this better. Storage containers for common ingredients that makes it less messy? I don't even know what it is that would do it, which is why I'm asking.
I want to learn to cook better and experiment with things but all of that stuff I mentioned just turns me off to it. :(

One of our Server 2003 machines is on the fritz, and it just so happens to be our Citrix terminal services box. The network connections service will not start! This is keeping every other service from starting, and it is highly depended on; we need it so users can retrieve their email and all that fun stuff.
I've been pulling my hair out since 9am this morning. After cleaning off Vundo from this machine, everything has just gone down the tubes. Any suggestions? Right now we're reloading the last known good registry, but I don't think it's going to work.

It has some issues, like needing to install games (especially after downloading them from the store... wtf) and being ugly, but the UI and no-nonsense approach to the presentation of everything is prime time. It makes the 360 feel like a toy for adolescents. I don't own a single blu-ray or an actual exclusive PS3 title that isn't from the store, but so far this thing has been worth every penny.
So who wants to play Wipeout HD online with me?

Fantastic tits.
Other than that, liking the slow evolution of the old team getting back together minus the excellent rabblerouser McNulty, Avon shaving years off by arranging the dope thing, although I think the "Greek" plotline looks a bit cliched Sopranos-style at this stage but we'll see how it pans out.

I'm thinking about getting an JesusiPhone...
There was a lot of discussion in this thread (http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=19764211#itemanchor_19764211), about whether to get it now, be patient (lol) and wait for the 3.0/new phone announcement...
My question now is, if I buy the phone tomorrow, what's my recourse in terms of getting the new handset if it launches in the next month or two...?
The only reason I could see myself regretting the 3G version over the rumored new one is if the new one has a faster CPU/RAM... and I guess if it comes with more storage for the same price (which is almost certain)...
The process as I understand it would be one of these options:
a) get on the line with Rogers and try to squirrel a HUP out of them for another $199 or whatever
b) resell the phone and buy the new one outright
c) resell the phone and plan and signup for the new one
I want the phone really badly, but the adult part of my troubled mind says be patient...

So last weekend I decided to watch Die Hard because I hadn't seen it in awhile. Apparently I hadn't even watched them since I got my 16:9 HDTV a few years back, because when I started the movie I was quickly enraged by the fact that instead of being true widescreen, it did that letterboxing of a 4:3 picture bullshit, so I had this teeny tiny fucking little window to watch the movie in. All three movies are this way!
I have an old 3-pack that I got around 2000-ish that they don't even sell new anymore:
http://www.amazon.com/Die-Hard-Trilogy-Bruce-Willis/dp/6305286566/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1240880002&sr=8-6
This simply will not do. I have decided to remedy the situation with a new set of movies. Of course if I'm going to buy one of them I have to buy all three, since it's a trilogy. All three of them.
But to get these Blu-Ray would run me $60, which I'm not sure I am wanting to spend.
But I found these plain old DVDs for $25, not bad at all:
http://www.amazon.com/Die-Hard-Collection-Harder-Vengeance/dp/B000O77SQS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1240876120&sr=8-4
BUT. I don't want to buy this just to have the same shitty problem with the thing I don't know the technical name for. So how can I be sure I won't throw these DVDs in the microwave once I view them?
Thanks Shack!

This has led to some very awesome moments because I have to be creative on how I free some of them. For the wasp, I used the glass method where I waited for him to land on my kitchen window and I trapped him inside of a glass, then worked a piece of hard paper between the window and the glass to close it up.
More tricky was my most recent target, a big ass house fly. Flies are way more agile and quick to evade than a wasp, so I had to be more cunning. In the past I made a practice of killing flies on sight with a quick clap and/or grabbing them out of the air, shaking them around, and throwing their dizzy selves through the air. Because of this practice, I'm pretty zen-like about being able to connect my hands to them mid-flight.
Now that I am trying to be all pacifist about it, I handled it a little different. I didn't want to risk cupping the fly in my hand because I might have smooshed him in the attempt on the edge of my palm. Instead, I observed his flight pattern, and mid-flight, I bitch slapped his ass out of the air. He flew through the air and landed on my kitchen counter, dazed and confused. He was laying on his back and his mouth was moving around. I went over and picked him up with a little bit of paper towel to not hurt him, blew on him to make sure he was ok and alive, and delivered him to sweet freedom outside.
TLDR: I have formed a truce with insect kind, and I wish them well.
