Did you even play AvsP? It was the most gut-wrenching game I've ever played. So what if the graphics aren't up in the Q3 league? They're still pretty decent. AvsP has enough atmosphere to put most modern shooters to shame.
Some people still put gameplay ahead of eye-candy. And if you're a gore-hound (and who isn't?) you can even do locational damage.
