Champions Online Release Date Announced

15
Cryptic Studios' superhero MMO Champions Online is to be released for PC on July 14, DarkZero reports from a press event held by publisher Atari in London today.

Apparently, the date wasn't meant to be announced until May 8, as sites like IncGamers have pulled their reports, but let's distract from that with new screenshots.

There's no update to Atari's previous announcement that Champions Online would be coming to "consoles"--with only an Xbox 360 version confirmed so far--after the PC.

Says, CO Beta tester. But then, we say this about every MMO launching.

This game is truly not ready for release.

Bugs. Instability. Bugs. More bugs. Did I mention bugs? In other words, it's like every other MMO at launch.

They are still trying to balance basic things like skill sets and power trees right now. The crafting system only seems there because this is an MMO and all MMOs must have a crafting system right?

Oh, let's not forget they're JUST NOW adding major game components in related to feats and such. (Can't share detail, sadly).

Oh, and the setting is just.. terribly boring. I mean, it is mind-numbingly dull.

Yeah, I'm in the beta as well. I honestly think it needs to come out in the fall. I'd like for them to give it some time, but I guess Atari isn't havin' it.

Seriously. This game needs a way more time in the oven, They're trying to build a house before the foundation is finished. They also really need to open up the beta playtimes, the amount of time they give us to test this game seriously hampers our ability to really put the game through its paces and properly log the many many bugs that riddle this game.

This is just another classic example of a game being rushed to completion, released before it's even finished, and relying on patches and updates to (eventually) bring it to a polished state. Of course, by that point, their subscriber numbers will be nil. It's happened to others who've had a better game, and it's going to happen again.
