Cities XL Beta Registration Begins

8
Developer Monte Cristo today opened beta sign-ups for Cities XL (PC), offering applicants the chance to be one of those testing the city simulation-MMO hybrid.

Along with city-wide construction and management, Cities XL will also offer "tycoon-styled" gameplay, such as a ski resort, through various game extension modules.

Once slated for Q1 2009, the game is now expected to launch sometime this year.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

The massively multiplayer part makes sense. I'm not sure I see anything yet that would make me want to pay a subscription fee, though. (I'm not even sure they are planning a fee, of course.)

They said there'll be a fee, but it might be worth the price because as far as I know, no one's ever attempted something like this at this scale before. The idea of being part of a global economy and having different people run businesses within your town is too awesome to pass up.

I would normally FULLY concur with SniperWolf22 here - but I can also see that this may a game-style that would work well for the MMO space. Time will tell I suppose. It doesn't look terribly interesting to me but each to his own.

Persistence is key. The sense of accomplishment, and ability to build your progress rather than starting from scratch all the time provides tons of entertainment value, as it seems like more than just time wasted.
