Having already fulfilled the first of the three steps for releasing downloadable content--announcement--publisher Sony today progressed to phase two--a solid release date--for Guerrilla's upcoming Killzone 2 (PS3) map pack, "Steel and Titanium."

The two new multiplayer maps, Wasteland Bullet and Vekta Cruiser, are due April 30. Now, all that's left is the last step--pricing details--and the cycle can start anew.

I finally played the Killzone demo this past weekend. Every single set piece involved me finding the cover spot and sitting there to slowly pop off heads. I really didn't have to run at my enemies at all and the gameplay felt fairly static. Is this just the first level or does it get better? It wasn't bad it just wasn't as interesting as a CoD4 (no cover) or Gears (cover).

Imo, they tried to be exactly a mix between CoD4 and Gears. The movement (I havent tried it recently after the patch) was like playing first person GoW where turning felt so clunky and slow. If you play the game on easy, you can rush and pop enemies like CoD4 but near the end there's a lot more cover and pop out because enemies get super annoying.

The controls felt REALLY sluggish for an FPS. I imagine you can tweak them but I typically play games at the default.

yeah the controls sucked really bad at launch but they patched it a few times since then and they are MUCH MUCH better its alot closer to cod4 now

You can tweak them, and it does help a little

Almost every other console FPS/TPS applies hefty amounts of aim-assist (either aim magnetism or aim friction) to counter the controller's inherent imprecision. Killzone 2 applies very little aim assist while shooting form the hip and ZERO aim assist while in iron sights, so it leads people to believe the controls are less precise than in other games. In fact, the game is no more or less precise really than any other console FPS, it just doesn't rely as much on the aim-assist crutch as other games.

That's unfortunate. Resistance 1, 2 and now this have all really disappointed on the single player front.

        I do like Resistance 2 co-op/competitive though.

that's like saying COD4 is just a shooting gallery with infinite respawning enemies and grenade spam

You have to move in CoD4. You're constantly adjusting your position. Grenades are thrown at you and you cannot just hug the cover. I felt like cod4 was very dynamic and fluid and this felt less so. I admittedly only played the first level so it may change.

The first level of KZ2 really isn't indicative of the rest of the game at all. It's a lot more dynamic, dangerous and exhilarating. By no means the best single player ever, but it's quite a bit of fun and rewards smart play.

Cool...that's what I was looking for. Any vehicle levels? Sniper type levels?

Yes, though the Walker level is the only one of any serious length. Sniper levels yes, but sniping is not required on those levels, just a preference.

btw, I enjoyed KZ2 more than Gears 2 despite it having less variety in the combat... and contrary to what the other person said you don't need to be playing in easy to move from cover or rush the enemy, seems like opinions of several people who didn't actually play the game

the controls also feel sluggish at first but they feel natural after a while. the game is balanced for them in the same way cover shooters are popular because it fits the inferiority of the gamepad. it feels natural in the scope of the game.

About how long is the game? How many levels are there? Are you usually fighting w/ a squad (CoD style) or more lone wolf?

      1. The demo is only the first level
      2. You're limited to the second easiest difficulty level

The full game is much better. The enemy AI is a notch above most shooters (on the higher difficulty levels anyway), and you don't have to park yourself behind cover all the time. It is the smart thing to do at times....after all, this isn't Doom, but there are plenty of opportunities to try and flank the enemy if you so desire.
