Pirates of the Caribbean series director Gore Verbinski has decided not to helm the fourth franchise sequel, leaving his schedule open to take on the planned film adaptation of 2K Boston/Australia's BioShock.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," said Verbinski in a statement. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

According to a trade article carried by Latino Review, Universal Pictures' BioShock movie is on target to begin production in 2010.

John Logan (The Aviator, Star Trek: Nemesis) is set to pen the screenplay for BioShock, while Verbinski will likely direct. BioShock creator Ken Levine is apparently being "regularly consulted" during pre-production.

Or perhaps not. 2 and 3 are crap. The effects are great but neither capture the charm of the first.

i'm sorry, but this makes no sense. if anything the 3rd movie was better than the first 2.

i'm noticing a trend here. people always gravitate towards the first movie (ie. Matrix) because they come up with a perception of the world they think is being created. then they have the inability to appreciate the sequels because it doesn't live up to their "imagination".

lol, the first movie followed the Disneyworld ride pretty closely. After that they had to fake a plot to keep making money.

Why does it make no sense? Sequels by there very nature tend to be crap as the studio's are just trying to cash in on the success of the first. There's probably only a very small handful where the sequels are better than the first, and Pirates (and the Matrix) certainly isn't in that category. You're certainly free to feel otherwise but I'd be curious to see why you think World's End is better.

Good fucking god no. Pirates three was abysmal in all regards.

Well, I'd say in many cases that's probably true. Inflated expectations and hype tend to disappoint.

However, I'm going to agree with most of the others here. What was it about Pirates 3 that you found better than the first 2?

I think it was analogous to Spiderman 3, where they tried to do too many things at once. With Davy Jones heart, Calypso, Bootstrap Bill, Commodore whatever... they had too much drama and too many side-plots that weren't entirely necessary or well done.

half of the ride of the 3rd movie was the fact that all of that was going on at once... i think you are looking for too much from what is, like i said, essentially a live action disney cartoon.

i was gonna explain more but... mad bh's reasons below are irrefutable.

How does it being a "live action Disney cartoon" let it off the hook from being a turd? I have no problem with light and fluffy movies, which is exactly what the first one was but it was well done.

I liked 1 a whole hell of a lot, and was pretty entertained by 2. I found 3 to be a convoluted mess though.
