Verbinski Drops Pirates in Favor of BioShock Film

Pirates of the Caribbean series director Gore Verbinski has decided not to helm the fourth franchise sequel, leaving his schedule open to take on the planned film adaptation of 2K Boston/Australia's BioShock.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," said Verbinski in a statement. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

According to a trade article carried by Latino Review, Universal Pictures' BioShock movie is on target to begin production in 2010.

John Logan (The Aviator, Star Trek: Nemesis) is set to pen the screenplay for BioShock, while Verbinski will likely direct. BioShock creator Ken Levine is apparently being "regularly consulted" during pre-production.

Movies are so mainstream. I wonder how they'll handle the Ayn Rand theme in light of this. Not even WoW and Sims can compare to how mainstream movies are, and BioShock is more like collecting 19th century stamps and coins in comparison.

This is appropriate. The same guy that directed a movie based on a Disneyland ride, is now going to direct another movie based on a game that felt like a Disneyland ride -- this was not a good thing when compared to the pervious Shocks.

I think this movie would be a joke unless they retained the giblet parts, don't use some prettied up child stars for the needling bits and i want freddy style gore when the daddies drill through some schmuck.

otherwise he's just aiming for the uwe boll level of quality.
