Morning Discussion

While my ridiculous backlog of unplayed games just grows and grows, I find myself going back, time and time again, to Henry Hatsworth and TrackMania DS.

I'll get more into Hatsworth later, but TrackMania's draw, for me, is the customization. Really dig the handling of the car used in Stadium races? Use the in-game credits to get more Stadium action and ignore the others. Like Platform, the challenge of avoiding holes and having enough speed to make the jumps? Just play that to unlock more.

There's a lot to choose from, including the option to make your own tracks, but what's available is up to you. That freedom, not being forced to partake in the portions you don't enjoy as much, that's a nice shift from the linear "do all this to advance" mentality.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

It was one of those endearing and adventurous movies that you truly understood in your childhood; the bike riding around the neighbourhood, undermining of authority, scheming to find puzzles and new areas to explore. Couple that with the fact that the cinematography was par for the course in its day and you have a recipe for an epic movie.

Yeah, you're right. If you think about it most movies that came out before one's time don't have the same impact as they did towards the audience they were aiming at when they were created. There's a disconnect there that most people don't pick up on -- this also explains why people don't "understand" Pop-Art -- it's not that it was "good" art, it simply questioned what came before it. Likewise, we can look back on a film like "Philadelphia" and go, "So what he was gay, who gives a shit." What the..... am I making sense?

Die Hard is the defining action movie and re-invented the genre. Willis stole the show from the muscle-bound meatheads that were dominating action films.

I picked up the Monster Squad 20th Anniversary DVD for 3.99 a few months back and it's holds up extremely well. I haven't seen it since I was a kid and still loved it.

It was pretty funny. Not in a 'lol' kind of way, but I enjoyed it. It didn't drag on, there wasn't some deep-reaching meaning. It was a solidly good movie.

The meaning is that cutting out of school is smarter then going to school. Thats what I learned, lol

I never saw The Goonies until 2004 when I was in Iraq and some girl heard I hadn't seen it. I had been given the nickname of "Data" before then by the Sergeant Major when we were being given Call Signs for Commo. They were going to call me either "Hollywood" or "Blockbuster" because I loaned a lot of DVDs out. But this other E-4 there had 3 times the DVDs I had so he got that nickname.

It all made sense after seeing the movie. Still a cool nickname I guess, I could have been that guy who was called "Mad Dawg" when I was deployed because his wife was a bitch. I don't really know why that connects.

Even Basic and Advanced Training the Drill Sergeants gave me that nickname. Two different bases and two DS's gave me that nickname, so I guess the resemblance must have been striking.

I remember one guy in Basic who looked like Urkel so he was called that. DS said his battle cry should be, "Did I do that?" That was a hilarious moment.

No judgment, I didn't see it till I was over 20 too. Same with Weird Science, and that shit is classic.
