League of Legends is inspired by popular Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, where players level up a single avatar amongst a giant battle of smaller armies.
Developer Riot Games' team includes some of the people behind DotA and certainly appears to be following nicely in its wonderful, wonderful footsteps.

Gameplay, I have no way of comparing things.
Release dates? Demigod is being released in less than two weeks, LOL(I couldn't help myself) is being released at least 3-8 months later
From a personal perspective, I've enjoyed Chris Taylors games, but just wished that he supported them a little longer with bug fixes, especially for SupCom: Forged Alliance. However, my problems for that game originated from the fact that it was developed for multiplatform and they changed the sound coding. Because Demigod is supported by renowned publisher, Stardock, I believe GPG will be able to support their game much better than before, and that Stardock will be encouraging them to do so as it is their money that they're handing over.
As for LOL, I don't know the company's background, their publisher, etc. so I don't know if the game will be able to stay online for many years, or if it will die off and online support decommissioned like it was for Hellgate: London.
