Weekly PC Sales: Total War Follows The Path
by Chris Faylor, Apr 02, 2009 8:57am PDTIt's that time of the week again, as the marketing research gurus at NPD have released their list of the best-selling PC games at US retailers during the week of March 15.
For the most part, NPD's list is unchanged from that of the previous week, the only tweak being the addition of Civilization IV, which bumped Ravenhearst down a spot.
However, Direct2Drive's list of best-selling games was a bit more active--Defense Grid: The Awakening topped the digital download provider's chart thanks to a half-price sale, with newcomers HAWX, Men of War and The Path also appearing in the top ten.
NPD's Top Ten (3/15 - 3/21)
- Empire: Total War / Creative Assembly / $41
- World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King / Blizzard / $39
- The Sims 2 Double Deluxe / EA Maxis / $20
- Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II / Relic / $42
- World Of Warcraft Battle Chest / Blizzard / $40
- World Of Warcraft / Blizzard / $20
- The Sims 2 Apartment Life Exp. Pack / EA Maxis / $20
- Spore / EA Maxis / $50
- Civilization IV / Firaxis / $20
- Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst / Big Fish Games / $20
Direct2Drive's Top Ten (3/15 - 3/21)
- Defense Grid: The Awakening / Hidden Path
- Command & Conquer 3: Red Alert - Uprising / EA LA
- Tom Clancy's HAWX / Ubisoft Romania
- Men of War / Best Way
- Empire: Total War / Creative Assembly
- Rome: Total War Gold Edition / Creative Assembly
- Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II / Relic
- The Path / Tale of Tales
- World in Conflict: Soviet Assault Expansion / Massive
- Final Fantasy XI Vana'diel Collection 2008 / Square Enix
Remember, NPD only accounts for brick and mortar stores in the United States and does not include digital distribution, while Direct2Drive's data only represents one of the many online digital download platforms available to PC owners.

I guess with dodgy trade reviews giving it 94% (how the hell did that happen, the world map looks like a 3yr old drew it, squads don't go where you tell them too, you're lucky if Steam will let you play or install it, let alone the crashes) then it's going to keep riding on the charts. Shame. With everyone being forced to use Steam and other persistent online presence style bloatware in the background it'd be good to see if they use the data for something sensible rather than trying to forcefeed 'social networking' to us all or letting our web-enabled Grandmas know we are slaughtering alien invaders. One interesting stat would be replayability of games, i.e how much time you spend revisiting a game, much more reliable than reviews and I imagine E:TW has an average playtime of 6-12 hours before people dump it never to return or heading off for a proper total war in on of its previous versions.

It's still 50 dollars? I got Empire: Total War for like, $35 and it's hardly been out for a few months.

Still enjoying Empire, for all its bugs. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is near total victory in Europe, thanks mostly to me taxing the crap out of my subjected French population.
