Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Mar 30, 2009 4:25am PDTThings I learned this weekend: 1) Fort Wayne still dominates in the Roller Derby arena, 2) Henry Hatsworth continues to be amazing, and 3) The Wire S4 makes me happy.
I do hope everyone out there was able to kick back and relax after the organized chaos of Game Developers Conference. And who knows what this week will bring our way?

Books to Read
http://pupismyname.shackspace.com/books.html
This list is based on The Modern Library's Board and Reader picks in fiction and non-fiction (1998-1999), combined with Time magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 through 2005. I combined these five lists, removed the duplicates, and put them into two columns. As I read a book on the list, I cross it out. As you can see I have a lot of work ahead of me.
Here is some information about the lists I used to create my meta-list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-Time_100_Greatest_Novels
http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100best.html
As with any list, there are plenty points to debate and many many notable missing entries (anything after 2005, for starters). My goal in compiling (and eventually reading) these books is to become more rounded as a person, and to that end I left alone some that I know I will be uncomfortable reading, especially in the non-fiction category. I could have continued to collect and merge more best-of lists into my own, but I decided against it after seeing the sheer volume of stuff I hadn't read already. It's kind of depressing really. What's even more depressing is that I actually own around 20-25 of the unread books on the list.
Feel free to copy, add to, or otherwise use this list however you see fit. If you see any glaring omissions (BEST BOOK EVER), please let me know and I might add it.

MotionBox is a video uploading service that's pretty awesome. For $30 a year, you can upload videos that are HD, at any size, and any length. The free version allows up to 750MB, but it's mostly a limited trial to get you to upgrade to Premium.
I uploaded a personal video that was 3GB big, and an hour long, and it looks great. MotionBox also has other awesome features, as well. I've been waiting for a video service like this for years. Premium members can also embed the HD version anywhere (that accepts object tags, of course.) Here's another video, highlighting the scary growth of the young Gators defense:

But that's not what's weird.
During the commentary the director mentioned a subplot that was cut out of the film, but for a small reference. In the deleted segment (which wasn't filmed) John Spartan had a child. Because he was preserved in cryo-stasis, his daughter became older than he is, and was one of the underground dwellers. At the end of the film, there was supposed to be a reunion with John Spartan and his older daughter.
But that's not what's weird.
What's weird is that shortly after the commentary with director Marco Brambilla and producer Joel Silver starts, right after the villian Simon Pheonix is thawed out, Joel Silver doesn't say another word for the rest of the film.
Weird!

I don't want anyone to get too excited yet, as I still have a lot of work left to do to make this a viable solution, and Java is my least favorite Language. But:

Dear Sailor of Fortune,
You are receiving this email because you added unlimited Blu-ray access to your account for $1 a month. The number of Blu-ray titles has increased significantly and will continue to do so. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you've probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs.
As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan. The charge for monthly Blu-ray access on your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan will increase from $1 a month to $3 a month. The price of your 2 DVDs at-a-time (Unlimited) plan is not changing and remains at $13.99 a month.

Would like the best bang/buck as I don't have the expendable income yet for some 90/mo plan. Altell/Verizon and CellularOne/AT&T are the only carriers with a good signal here and there is no 3G at all. Help me shack!
I've had this game forever but never gotten around to it until now. I started it up yesterday with the excellent high resolution mods (http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=19547433).
Anyway...holy crap this game is awesome. I don't think there's ever been an intro level so detailed and filled with stuff to discover. I'm literally in awe. I do have some questions, though. Without giving away any story details, can anyone shed some light on these for me:
1. I did as much as I could in the Mortuary before exiting, however, I forgot to go back to Zombie #42. I recalled a memory of implanting something in him, but I forgot to get it before exiting. Am I screwed, or is there a chance to go back later?
2. I remember hearing that there's something special you have to do to become a mage class. Again, without spoiling story, is it obvious or is there the possibility of missing this entirely?

Can I somehow get someone to pay me for this? I've seen Amazon related "buy this album" links on blogs. Does Amazon give some sort of kickback, since it's essentially targeted advertising?
The site is http://www.monstunes.com btw.
Gonna be updating daily - a resurrection of the VSMOTD along with posts about my own music (which is hosted/available for download on the site). I just set it up, so if you can think of ways to improve it, please let me know! I've never run a blog, or a personal website, before.

what are you favorite sites for news, advice, and forums other than the 'big' sites which also host leagues (ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, etc), or rotoworld? I am doing FB for the first time this year.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/spector-we-need-to-drive-down-game-prices
Famed designer Warren Spector expressing the opinion that the games industry needs to work on bringing down prices. Here are some quotes conveying his thoughts on the topic:
"We've been a niche medium that over-charges for its product and therefore generates a lot of revenue which makes us a little bigger than Hollywood, which is crazy."
"The key is removing barriers to the creation of content and removing barriers to the consumption of content. Allowing people access to lots of it, at the lowest possible price where you can make a profit."
"I've always had this anecdotal belief that there's this magic price point for entertainment. And it's not a per dollar charge. No one thinks about how many hours they're going to get out of their entertainment dollars."
"If I've got a 20 dollar bill in my pocket I can go buy a book, go to a movie, but I can't buy a game. I can buy a CD, I can do so much even now, but you cannot buy a game."
