Shack PSA: Far Cry 2 $15 on Steam Today
by Chris Faylor, Mar 26, 2009 4:28pm PDTAs Ubisoft and Valve's week of one-day Steam discounts continues, the duo are now offering up a download of Far Cry 2 PC for $14.99--50% off the usual asking price.
Released this past October, Ubisoft Montreal's open-world first-person shooter has players taking missions in Africa whilst trying to fight off a nasty bout of malaria.
Far Cry 2 also marked the first retail game to debut DLC via Steam. At $5, the Fortune's Pack add-on brings more weapons, vehicles, and multiplayer maps to the game.

It's a hybrid FPS/RPG-lite with an emphasis on making choices and planning your encounters. You will not be led from one mission to the next (for the most part); it's really up to you to make up your own character through your mission and weapon choices. Once I 'got' that it was somewhat dfiffcult to go back to more linear shooters. I came to like the hindrances (malaria and weapon degradation), even!
It's not perfect and the story's kind of derivative and melodramatic, but as a first attempt at a new kind of shooter I found it oddly compelling. There are a ton of subtle touches that 'clue' you into how the game-world functions; for example, as your weapon wears out your character starts holding it up and looking it over for signs of problems - I didn't figure out the game was trying to 'tell' me my gun was about to blow up 'til about halfway through the game. :D
I hope Ubi makes a sequel that's even better. :D
