Mass Effect 2 Coming to PC, Xbox 360

While we've already known about the title for a while now--a teaser trailer was released last month--acclaimed role-playing game developer BioWare today formally announced its sci-fi RPG sequel Mass Effect 2.

The second entry in a planned trilogy, Mass Effect 2 will hit PC and Xbox 360 in early 2010. Publisher Electronic Arts had previously revealed the release timeframe, but refused to confirm platforms with Shacknews at that time.

"We're going to surpass the extraordinary gaming experience we brought our fans in Mass Effect by delivering intensified combat and expanded weapon options as well as increased depth of planet exploration, all while delivering a powerful, emotionally engaging story," said BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka.

"Mass Effect 2 is shaping up to be an unforgettable RPG-shooter experience, taking players on a non-stop roller-coaster ride filled with stunning plot twists and no-holds-barred action."

The studio also provided a brief synopsis of the plot, copied below:

The Mass Effect trilogy is a masterful science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life forms and mysterious uncharted planets. In this dark second chapter, Saren's evil army of Geth soldiers has just been defeated, and humans, who are still struggling to make their mark on the galactic stage, are now faced with an even greater peril...

Normally I'd agree but I'm a member of the old guard who grew up playing his RPGs with a controller in his hands (with a few notable exceptions of adventure titles) so I'm eagerly looking forward to the 360 release first.

I played Start Control 2 and Star Flight 1/2 with a gamepad, but for a "shooter," so basically Mass Effect, that's a big no in my book. The PC version was improved quite a bit over the 360 version, because of the mouse.

What Jackaxe said. Enjoy you old guard controller. I also grew up on controllers starting with the Fairchild system then Atari, Colecovision all the way up to my current PS3, 360 and Wii and from this I know that the PC controls trumps a gamepads for certain genres.

LOL. My first console experience was on a Fairchild. My uncles had one. :) Besides the PS3 and 360, which my friends have, I've owned most consoles.

What makes console RPG gamers the "old guard"? I'd say RPGs have been played on the PC platform far longer than on consoles. When did the NES come out? Late 80s? There were computer RPGs in the late 70s afaik.

As I said, a few notable exceptions. I rocked out quite a few RPGS on my PC in the 70s/80s. I just prefer the transition many made (or were imported to) console.

I can certainly wait for ME2 PC, especially considering ME was superior on the PC to the 360 version.

Does sucks we get it later though. I guess all that extra polish takes time ;)

Ya ME PC was the best for sure, then again almost all PC ports are way better (well not Saints Row 2) on the PC. I always sell my 360 versions as soon as I can get it on the PC.

"...then again almost all PC ports are way better...."

God I wish that were true. ME PC was actually a standout BECAUSE it was better than the console version, and not just a straight port.

At least MS doesn't have their grubby paws on BioWare this time around, so there should hopefully be no paid exclusive -- well it's a MS platform either way. I'm pretty sure the PC version will fall with in the same time period as the 360 version, as EA is currently trying to save money, by not having to market games multiple times.

I wanted to play Mass Effect on the 360, but I never got around to doing it. I had heard that it was a bit buggy, so I was glad that I grabbed the PC port... I'll definately be waiting for the PC version to come out... I need to play through it again, maybe it'll run on my laptop...

I feel your pain. Maybe they will have learned from the Fallout 3 release and give it to us simultaneously.
