Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Mar 16, 2009 7:06am PDTMonday, already? It seems like I barely got anything accomplished this weekend.
Really, I just played an hour or two Resident Evil 5, co-created and tested a Peggle drinking game, cleaned the apartment, watched some Wire, and read a few chapters of Snow Crash. The rest of the time, I was either sleeping or doing something here.
There were also about five minutes spend on a hammock. Hammock weather, at last!
On the plus side, um, I've got another chance at the weekend here in a couple days?

Great display, browsing and music player But….the iPhone is a mediocre phone. Period. Lousy battery life, have to shut off Bluetooth, and 3G else gotta charge it every night. Keyboard so-so --easy to make mistakes; and no custom preset messages. No copy/paste. I can’t leave myself voice reminders. Lousy cheap camera, not even a flash. Geez, I can’t record video either. Can’t take stuff off the phone easily. I have to connect to a computer! No Bluetooth data. Weak 3G coverage where I live. Holding it for phone calls is uncomfortably wide. GPS navigation useless, no talking or re-routing. No effin speed dial! Where’s the increasing ringer? WTF, No freakin hands-free voice command or dialing. What, no stereo Bluetooth? My boss sent me a zip file, couldn't open it. What a scam, but at least I look cool having an iPhone.

For voice reminders you can definitely get apps that will help with that. I would name one but they all have different strengths and weaknesses.
GPS navigation might be missing but there is no phone that has Google maps which includes navigation functionality, it's a trade off. There is already an app that offers navigation but it doesn't use Google maps and I believe it might be missing voice navigation.
Bluetooth data becomes a pointless thing to need if you use an app that will let you transfer files between your computer over WiFi. I use AIr Sharing for this functionality.
No video recording is sadly not fixable with an app unless you jailbreak.
Increasing ringer actually is already in place, it just isn't customizable (it increases really fast), it's odd someone would complain about this one. I am pretty sure jailbreaking can fix this.
Hands-free (voice dialing) can be fixed with an app, but it obviously requires that you launch the app. I find voice dialing to be way too inaccurate and most people don't even use it or don't know how to.
Copy & paste will hopefully come in the next firmware update. This complaint and video recording are about the only two real complaints.
All the other complaints are ridiculous and nearly every smart phone has the same issues. They are all just stretching to find problems.
