Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Mar 12, 2009 6:56am PDTThat Xbox Live Arcade version of Peggle is pretty slick, to the point where just navigating the menus is strangely fulfilling. It probably has to do with the sound effects they use.
Of course, my worst fears were realized when I partook in the new online multiplayer mode and got completely, embarrassingly decimated. As in, an opponent more than doubled my overall score each time. I really need to brush up my ball-bouncing skills.
And for some reason, I find myself drawn back to Resistance 2. I wasn't impressed by the first few stages when I got it home, they felt too scripted and bland, but I'm enjoying the later levels much more. Will keep on trucking through it and see what happens.

If all goes as planned, tonight will be the start of my DnD campaign. I have some experience DMing, more so than the rest of my group, but we have never attempted a full blown campaign. As such, I need advice from anyone who has participated in a campaign (of any RPG system really).
From players, in the event that your campaign went very well, what did your GM do to make it seem that way? In the event that it went poorly, what did your GM do to mess things up?
From GMs, what are your best tips for staying organized? If you had a main plot, how did you make sure to stay on track? Most importantly, I want to hear about any mistakes you may have made. What went wrong, how did you fix them, and what would you have done differently?
I hope I'm not asking too much, I just want to make sure that my group has a memorable campaign experience so we can go on to try some other RPGs.

Also, has anyone seen anywhere to buy the Soviet Assault pack? I'd love to run through the campaign again. I can't find anyone selling the pack on its own anywhere online.

I got my Holga/Polaroid back last week, and have since been reading up and trying to figure out how to use the thing. The exposure calculator site you gave me helped a lot, and I even found an iPod app that does the same thing!
Anyway, here is my first successful Holgaroid if you are interested http://www.flickr.com/photos/skyeslee/3348731948/
TLDR Thanks sparkly

Take Wipeout 3 for example. The gameplay is on-par or maybe a little worse than Wipeout XL, but the menus were just amazing (RIP Designer's Republic), and that's what makes me love it just a little bit more than Wipeout XL.
I mean, look at this beauty of a UI (starting at 1:30)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOYY7w5VUN0
On the flip side, the UI for the Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution soccer series is pretty shitty, and they're lucky the gameplay is so good, because it really pisses me off and makes me like the game less as a whole. Every year they talk about how they've revamped the UI, but they just reskin the same retarded shit from the last year and it still sucks. I haven't tried the latest version but I bet it's equally shitty.
This brings up another point.
Rule #1 in game design:
Do not make me sit through a loading screen to get to the menu. I'll give you one second, maybe two, but after that I start to get pissed off. It's a menu. Do not try to show off your engine in the stupid menu. Design something nice and usable and make it load instantly. If you want to load fancy shit in the background while I'm using your menu, and load it in along the way, that's fine, but do not make me wait.
Half-Life 2 is a big violator of this rule. Why do they make me stare at this blurry screenshot while an entire goddamn level loads in the background, just for me to click through a few menu screens for 15 seconds. If you added it all up, the amount of time I've spent waiting for HL2's menu to load is dwarfed by the amount of time I've spent actually using the menu. I swear I've sat through that stupid loading screen a billion times. Why not load the menu on top of the blurry screenshot, let me start using the UI, then fade in the background scenery whenever it's done?

I think it would be fun to take 1 photo each and send the camera in the mail to other shackers from around the world. Send it back to me, I'll get it developed, scanned, and post them on a website. Have to be someone would be willing to pay shipping to the next shacker, and preferably not you white elephant fuckers who are going to take 6 months to take 1 photo.

So I've been dedicated to Blanka the last couple weeks, he's really, really powerful and extremely effective against almost all the characters with the exception of Balrog. Man, a good Balrog is just so damn hard to beat if they know what they are doing. I think I just need to work on my crossups some more.
So anyway, some general Blanka tips for you noobs in reply:

What was the deal with the leveling/skills system, I remember talk about it becoming horribly skewed and unbalanced later on if you didn't play it right.

Watching Max Payne, and I'm shacking. I'm trying so hard to like it, but I can't. I simply can't.
And I began to ponder, how would have I written the script and the whole "why video game movies suck". I still can't put my finger on it, but I think it's because film narration and video game narration are so different, that it's almost impossible to transfer the narrative of a video game to film without bastardizing it so much were it becomes unrelated on most fronts.
We love Max Payne the game because we got to blow the shit out of bad guys, diving in the air in slow motion. I honestly doubt anyone loved Max Payne because of the story; regardless Max Payne does feature a nice narrative in comparison of most video games of the era.

recently whenever i boot up my computer, the little networky icon thing in the tray has an x on it like theres no connection, and if i try to load up firefox shortly upon getting into windows it wont load, though the process is running in taskmgr. If i start IE, it will load, but it will just sit at "connecting..." when it tries to load google....
BUT, if i wait a minute or two before doing anything, the little x thingie on the network connection will go away, and everything will work fine.
I got all the newest drivers and shit, any ideas? (vista 64)
