Unreal Tournament 3 Steam Sale, Free Weekend Promotions Extended on 2000% Player Increase

Epic's multiplayer shooter Unreal Tournament 3 has seen a 2000% increase in simultaneous players of the game following the recent Titan Pack update and various Steam sales, according to Valve.

As a result, the Steam UT3 40%-off sale has been extended through Sunday, March 22. Valve also notes that the game will again be free to play this weekend, beginning on Friday March 13.

UT3 2.0 is like Windows 7.

UT3 had a cold reception. Then Epic patched it and suddenly gamers welcomed UT3. Nothing has fundamentally changed with the game — aside from a few new game modes, new maps and pricing.

Vista had a cold reception. Then Microsoft labeled it Windows 7 and suddenly gamers welcomed it. Nothing has fundamentally changed with the OS—aside from a few interface changes and pricing.

UT3 and Vista were solid products before 2.0 and 7.0. The product relables are having a positive effect on consumers.

Well I think Valve is running this due to the abysmal failure to support a mass influx of downloads last weekend.

by the time I finally had it downloaded - i had less than 24 hours to play - further hampered by stuttering on my 8800 GT. Happy to try it out again this weekend though...

This is why I believe having free weekends are much better than demos. You get to play the real game, with the real people. It's much better to judge its quality. Plus, people who already have the game may rejoin to play for the free weekend, knowing there'll be more people around.

Of course, for companies it also means they won't get stuck with people playing demo that's just as the fun as the final game (ie, BF42 demo). It's a win-win situation.

It's probably because people are now starting to get PCs that can actually run UT3 the way it's meant to look on a PC. Typically in the past I'd try to keep my desktop up to date and running the newest games but if Valve can use Source for 6 some odd years (I think) then my PC should still run the games off that engine, which makes Steam a huge draw and makes me think games don't necessarily need the bleeding-edge graphics as much as I absolutely love seeing every fancy new effect implemented, even if my computer can't run it. I don't know what I'm rambling on about really, I was just trying to say that now we might be getting closer to an average PC that can play this. Meanwhile, since my PCs probably can't, I'm going to continue playing TF2 and eagerly wait for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 to come out since they look fantastic and should run on just about any PC.

Good for Epic. I've slagged on UT3 around here a lot but this last patch made it really really good. Epic could have just as easily let it die and moved onto the next project, so kudos to them for showing real commitment.

This was a fantastic move by Epic. I hope that this episode shows the corporate 'suits' (at other companies as well) that if you do a PC game 'right' and don't thrash out a port out and forget about it, or give up on the platform altogether, you get rewarded with customer satisfaction and nice sales.

What Valve and Epic are realizing that continued support and updating post release keeps the cash flow coming in, and creates a larger customer base for future products. Blizzard has been doing this since Diablo 2 - and after having sold a bazillion copies other companies are finally starting to mimmic this practice.

This is why it's great to be a PC gamer!

Seriously, I think that the Titan pack has really brought UT3 up to snuff versus other FPSes. If you haven't tried it yet, you really have NO good reason not to. Shackbattles await!

In addition, as both a mapper and modder, I can say that the engine is AMAZING for content creation. Did you know that you can actually use photoshop .psd files as textures, no conversion whatsoever?

OK so I think the real victory here is that the things we all thought would work:

- Put the game on Steam
- Fix a bunch of stuff

Nice! I bought it ala last weeks trial. There are always a few decently full servers to play warfare so I've been pretty happy. Probably playing 1-2 hours a night at this point so certainly getting my moneys worth!
