Rage Not Coming This Year, Says id
by Chris Faylor, Mar 09, 2009 8:25am PDTid's post-apocalyptic not-quite-open-world shooter Rage definitely "won't be out this year," id CEO Todd Hollenshead revealed in the latest episode of Gametrailers TV.
Though some debate whether Hollenshead said "will" or "won't," Geoff Keighley, who conducted the interview, confirmed via Twitter that Rage isn't coming this year.
Per usual, id has remained rather quiet about a possible release date for Rage, with project lead Tim Willits claiming that the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Mac game will probably hit before 2011, assuming that's "when it's fun and when it's done."

Doom3 was great at the time but it became the same thing over and over after a few levels and Quake 4 was the same after the first level.
I am sure the game will play well and the action will be solid but after playing Doom3 and Quake 4 I really have my doubts iD can create an emmersive world with decent NPC character developement.
They are really good on the tech side of the engine and coding but when it comes to the more 'house of cards' art of building a great story line and character depth they don't seem to execute as well.

Maybe for once, id can conjure up a solid story line and wrap a solid engine around it. Drop the overplayed 1990's game design conventions and try and try to innovate. I'm suspect they really don't know what kind of game its going to because they are so focused on the tech side. We know more about the tech than Rage itself - not a good sign.

But I haven't seen anything really good come from there since Quake 2, and nothing great since Quake. Everything since has been so-so. The intervening years have showed how much id depended on its early amalgam of ill-fitting personalities, outsized egos and wild talents.
I guess for people who shovel down games like they do french fries, it's fine. But there was an art that was once id.
"Was."
although no 2009 release wasn't a surprise.

I have to wonder, though, will this still look amazing by then? I remember by the time Doom 3 came out we'd already seen games that were very close to it visually like Far Cry. I hope the game itself holds up this time.

I'm haven't been excited about id games since Quake 2 days, from Doom through Q2 graphical improvements were enough, but those days are long gone for me. Now I want an immersive, interesting game over one that sports the latest graphics. Sure graphics are nice and there is certainly a minimum bar for that, but give me something with a great story and interesting gameplay over the latest DX10 (11?) features.
