Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Mar 06, 2009 7:27am PSTHappy Friday, everybody! The weekend is almost here, just a few more hours.
No big plans for the weekend here, I think I'm just gonna kick back and play some games. Dawn of War II still has my eye, and I'm looking forward to experiencing the Prince of Persia Epilogue DLC that hit consoles yesterday.
My backlog was bad enough, but this recent wave of downloadable content is just killing me. All of a sudden, Grand Theft Auto IV, Tomb Raider Underworld, Fallout 3 and Prince of Persia are back in the stack. So much for the illusion of progress.

Hi Guys!
If you aren't joining us for WC3 DOTA games then you are missing out! I'm having the most fun online since the days of Quake 1.
You may ask "what is DOTA"? Here you go: http://mydotaguide.blogspot.com/2007/11/what-is-dota.html . Basically it's a custom map for Warcraft 3 where you pick a hero for 1 of 2 teams and level him, equip him, and kill other hero's and their bases. It's awesome!!!!! and it'll run on any PC that was created in the last 8 years or so.
When I first started hearing people talk about it I didn't know how to get up and going so here is a little list of what you would need:
Warcraft 3: I bought from the Blizzard online store for 39.99 but was informed last night that there was a 19.99 purchase available here:
http://cdkeyheaven.com/wc3%20roc%20and%20tft.html
- You can purchase the keys and digitally download WC3 and the expansion using the video.
You'll also need the map:
http://www.getdota.com/
- If you have problems putting the map in the right directory don't worry about it. You can join our game and download the map.
- They have AI maps for download there that will give you some practice of building up your Hero and learning how to stay behind the creeps.
Garena:
http://www.garena.com/
- This is just a way for us all to play together. It's not nearly as laggy as using Blizzard's built in Battlenet network. Create an account.. it's free and takes about 1 minute.
Optional:
Ventrillo:
http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
- Even if you don't have a microphone it's worth loading up and joining to hear what we're all talking about. Bead(Spaceless) talks about furry desires and McPants(Xanthos) yells at everyone.
PS - Sign up for the beta of League of Legends. The guys that made DOTA are making a new standalone game: http://leagueoflegends.com/beta/signup
If you have any questions, shack message me or find the shackdota group on steam. Plenty of people to answer questions there (i'm kgargs).

Ok, the ShacknewsUT3 server returneth.
Fresh install, no cruft or added maps or mods just yet. It had all the standard mods and maps that come with the game and the Titan pack.
Here's how voting works: You select the Vote option on the startup screen (accessible by hitting ESC). You'll *only* see the gametype field populated at this time. Once you select a gametype in that field the vote starts and everyone has about 15 seconds to vote on the gametype to change to. Once that 25 seconds is up, and if the vote passes, the Map field and the Mutator fields populate. You then have about 30 or so seconds to select a map and any mutator you want to go along with it. When the time limit is reached, the new gametype and map/mods will load up. You can elect to vote on a map change anytime during a game, not just at the end of a match.

For quick updates to check status, I suggest the ShacknewsUT3 twitter page: https://twitter.com/ShacknewsUT3
There is a server status page here: http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/8.12.69.118:7777/
There is also a server status box in my sig.
The steam UT3 group is here, join if you haven't. We have over 70 Shackers who own the game: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/shackUT3
I'll add custom maps and mods later, a majority of them need to be reworked for the new patch. All custom content is hosted courtesy of Shacker JT, many thanks to him.
Omnova has admin rights to the server, etc, but it should pretty much run itself.
We need to schedule a shackbattle pronto, so chime in on availability for the weekend.

It kind of nice not to have to tech certain buildings for certain units, as it focuses more attention on the fighting. I like that in a lazy kind of way, and especially when learning the game it makes it more accessable. BUT.... Do you guys think this change nerfs higher level play? I havn't played enough to say, but in Warcraft III the higher level players were very good at scouting to see what strategy their opponents were using early on.
So, dumbed down base management.. Good? or bad?

I've finished reading American Psycho and I am now enjoying Lolita but after this I am looking at reading some good Sci-Fi. I am looking for stand alone titles, not series/trilogies, unless they are totally fucking awesome.
Any recommendations?

What is your favorite movie that was originally adapted from something else like a game, book whatever?

If you are located in Austin I hate you forever if you don't come to this. Dognose and I will be driving house to house on Sunday kicking people in the balls who don't show. Right now our audience consists of like 10 gamers and then like 30 random people who don't know what a Duke Nukem is(many of them are hot chicks).

We were talking about music at work. For some reason, Lenny Kravitz "Come My Way" started going through my head and memories of Gran Turismo started going through my head. I may start playing Forza 2 (the closest game I have to GT) at some point tonight. Over the past week, I've been listening to the Braveheart Soundtrack. I always think of Ultima Online when I do. Quite frankly, playing UO with that music in the background is one of my most tranquil/happy online gaming memories.
What about you guys?

I made gyros last night from a 30 Minute meals recipe. It was really really good and I thought some of you guys might enjoy it!

I understand that I need to take more appetizing pictures of the meat next time so that it doesn't resemble unappetizing things. I have already begun lessons with Bean on how to take better pictures of food.

Then I got sent this article: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22398
"The future, according to Perry, is online and free-to-play. "I pesonally think the days of single-player games are numbered," he said. "Without question, our focus is entirely on multiplayer."
Weird coincidence but I agree with him. What do you guys think?
I personally have way more fun playing through a game with a friend. For instance, I don’t think I would have bothered completing Gears of War 1 or 2 on the hard difficulty (Or any difficulty for that matter) without doing it co-op. Single player games just lose my attention quickly and I end up feeling like its work.
Here is the article, granted that’s pretty much the only mention of this idea:

I mean honestly. Can't we have some higher math algorithm that gradually makes subtle changes through out the year? I mean, spring forward fall back in bed?
And then there's the Windows. Yes, I want you to automatically update my system for DST. Who selects no for this?

Before I start reading Wikipedia entries and re-read the book and all of that I'd like to bring up something I noticed, which I imagine is kind of an obvious theme but was wondering what you guys thought of it.
I think the similarities to "real" comic book heroes was an interesting facet. The book is pretty anti-superhero with many of the characters being fairly anti-hero themselves. But they almost seemed like they were heavily influenced by certain comic book characters and then twisted to be completely the opposite in a lot of ways. Examples:
Rorschach - Dick Tracy (except not clean cut, and filthy)
Adrian Veidt - Superman (mainly because of his fortress of solitude)
The Comedian - Captain America (in looks, and obviously his name kind of references The Joker)
Nite Owl - Batman (they do look similar)
Anyway, I thought the similarities were interesting. Kind of a commentary on comics themselves maybe?

Meanwhile I'm preparing a little dinner. The salad I already ate included lettuce, baby carrots, and spinach leaves, but that's boring and not worth talking about.
But my dinner also includes some tasty naan, turkey meatballs, and tomato sauce, and while it's perhaps not all that photogenic, it's darn tasty and worth a quick shot:

And yeah, that's this post in the background.

So…I get the awesome opportunity to pick a movie (or two) for a party.
The hard parts are that:
1) most of the group is on the conservative side (so nudity is out and strong language is to be kept to a minimum depending on the context). Raunchy humor will likely be too controversial (Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin, etc.) so I am leaning away from that.
2) Unknown tastes. I don’t want to be too obscure since I have little idea of their tastes (for instance they liked “Death at a Funeral” and “Ironman”) so I am leaning to something more mainstream that they may have just missed in the theaters.
3) Guys and girls. They do not have super-stereotypical tastes, but at the same time uber-violent movies and romantic comedies are out too.
So any suggestions :) Old or new it fine.
