Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Mar 03, 2009 6:00pm PSTI'm still not sure about that Watchmen game. It seems a pretty harmless beat-em-up, which I'd normally give a spin. But the more I think about it, the more I realize I have no desire to beat up dudes as Rorschach or Nite Owl. I mean, they're rather pathetic, as superheroes go. I think it'd just be sad.

There, I said it. :) It's just a better, more secure OS. Been using it for a month and love it. To me, the jump from XP to Vista feels the same as the jump from 98 to XP.

They're running their Pledge marathon, with some pretty sweet premiums at the $75 level:

Library of past shows free and streaming at:

Pick some at random, if you don't like it, try another. You're bound to found stuff you like.
PS: I don't work for them, but human-generated content is getting rare these days, and it's nice that a station of this quality has managed to stay clear of corporate interest thus far.

Trying to download Empire: Total War this morning has been a pain in my arse.
With downloads dropping from 1.4MB/s an hour ago to 50KB/s just right now, I wish I could find a decent download region. Are there any secrets to getting awesome speeds on Steam or is it always this variable?
MY GIRLFRIEND's laptop came with Vista installed. On Sunday it came up with "Disk Read Error" and refused to boot and stayed that way. Today I popped the OS disc back in and tried to do a Vista Repair and well, now the system will boot and come up to a solid black screen with a mouse cursor and nothing else. No keys work and there's nothing to click on and it stays like that forever. I don't like that every time it boots it thinks both drives need chkdsk'd... even if I let it run.
I can get to a Command Prompt if I boot into Recovery Mode, and I can get onto the hard drive and see all of her files, and thank the gods I was able to plug in a USB drive and it came up, so I should be able to rescue those files. However, I'd really like to just beat this thing and get her computer up and running again without doing a complete scorched Earth reinstall.
Has anyone beaten the black screen of emptiness?

Mille - Crysteena
http://deathelectro.com/wp-content/audio/Mille%20-%20Crysteena.mp3
Found on this electro blog: http://deathelectro.com/
You can stream it there or grab the mp3 (link above).
It's old school C64-influenced electro. It's old-school videogame music^10. Super awesome. I have a huge grin on my face as I listen.
Check it out!

Anyone want to sign up for Dropbox and help me out in the process?
https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTMyNDYwOQ
That referral link will get you some additional space when you register. It also helps me get some more space too. They give you 2 gigs free but I think my partner and I will hit that cap pretty soon with the project we're working on.
If anyone wants to sign up, I'd be extremely grateful if you used the referral link above. I hate asking for these types of things but in this case it would beneficial to the both of us!
P.S. The software kicks ass. I've used it once already for my senior design project and it made life so much easier.

I've got some buttons with text on them and I have a mask that is moving on top of the buttons and changing the color of the text from default to the color of the mask and I have no idea how to make the mask ease in and ease out of movement (not to mention I'm not sure what method I have to use to even make it move in the first place)
hopefully this won't give me random shacktags
button1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, goButton);
function goButton(EVENT:MouseEvent):void {
//get y position of button
var ypos = this.y
//move mask mc to button's y position (.move does not work)
maskmc.move(0,ypos);
//set speed?
}
thanks in advance

I know Itunes, but no. Also I'm having trouble getting Songbird to download these.
It's basically just a RSS feed with http links to the MP3 files. Are there any other programs that can do this for me?

Holy crap this book is excellent.
I just finished reading Temporal Void, and I totally had to share. If you enjoy Sci-Fi and haven't read the first two in this series (Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained) please take a chance. It's that good.

I'm now getting phone calls and emails saying that I have requested quotes on health insurance. The lady I talked to on the phone said that the request came in sometime yesterday, and the information used was my correct name, address, and email, but the birthdate was wrong.
This coupled with some fraudulent transactions on my Visa debit card a couple weeks ago (caught by Visa) makes me worried about possible identity theft.
Anyone familiar with this and know anything that I can do?

Stayed up until 4 a.m. to wait for Empire: Total War to unlock.
Still waiting to play it, as the download has restarted itself 3 or 4 times now after "troubles connecting to the STEAM server" with around 60% downloaded.

The whole milkshake scene at the end is awesome. For some reason I find the "acrossssssssss the room" part to be completely hilarious. I found myself repeating the scene to myself in the shower this morning in an attempt to sound like him.

On our corporate network we have 20 IP addresses. The one I use is .13 for my separate router that I use to fix computers. Obviously it's due to the computers that are infected that I'm hooking up to the router and spamming out.
I've heard what I need is a 'walled garden' but I'm not sure. It's not like I can just block port 25 since that's the listening port and the infected computers transmit on numerous ports. Am I correct?

Is anyone else as anal retentive about this? How did you solve this problem? Right now I'm staring down a two-step process where I rip then add art with another mp3 tagging program, but there's got to be a better way.
