Morning Discussion

Monday down, the rest of the week to go. By the time Friday rolls around, I hope to have completed 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and finished reading Cryptonomicon.

I can't even remember when I started dragging Cryptonomicon's hefty 1130-page paperback form around, though I'm sure it was sometime this year. Just being less than 200 pages from its conclusion, I'm already feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Next up, I think I'll be digging through Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, a (supposedly) lighthearted science fiction novel set in the Disney World of the future. After that, back to Mr. Neal Stephenson, in the form of Snow Crash. Or maybe I'll go way, way back and re-read some of those old Phillip K. Dick books. VALIS? Hmm.

I like Philip K. Dick but I thought VALIS was mostly a waste of time. It's a semi-coherent acid trip, basically.

Haha, you referred to VALIS as "semi-coherent."

I know, it's being generous. I really can't remember much of what happens in that book and I've read it twice.

I loved it for the same reason you hated it.

I remember it being OK. It makes more sense than the totally bonkers one he did before that. VALIS is him back on more or less an even keel and looking back at his mad self. It has been a while since I read it though, argh.
