Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Feb 26, 2009 7:22am PSTThursday? Yeah, no problem. I can do Thursday.
Starting to get a bit excited about this weekend's Frisco/Dallas Shackmeet of laser tag, bowling, gelato and doom. Maarten and I are both flying in tomorrow afternoon, as to not miss a moment of the Saturday hijinks. It's my first Shackmeet. Please, be gentle.

1. Any way to turn off the view bob so as to avoid getting nauseous playing this?
2. Is there a 3rd-person hack that works for the entire game's main storyline?
Thanks in advance...

I've been assigned the task of installing a new windows server for a client, but they don't want the PC to be visible on the network. Basically, they don't want the server to be visible through 'browse network', and only able to connect to it via remote desktop from 2 or 3 different IP's. I'm not certain how to go about this.
This is a pretty standard network, with one main router that the cable modem is connected to - and then various hubs around the building that the workstations plug into for internet access. Their connection provides static IP's that I can assign various workstations, so this new server WILL have it's own IP.
Is this something I can hopefully do through a standard router? Maybe some sort of software firewall on the server itself?

I got back into it recently, and I just love this game. There are so many cool units and buildings that they've added with the expansion pack.
Last game I played (against the AI), I cheated and gave myself a T3 engineer from all the races so I could play with all the units. It was a fucking blast! They've added a T4 (experimental) building to the Aeon that basically generates an almost unlimited amount of mass and energy (up to 10k mass). So I plunked one of those down and just went to town building. I was actually able to max it out so I built another! I think I was able to use up to ~20K or so mass building some of the more expensive stuff (which is pretty impressive consumption rate). Normally you are kind of limited on how many engineers you can have build something because they have a hard time fitting around the thing you are trying to build, but they've added this Engineering Station building for the UEF which can hold two little flying engineering thingies, they can be used to help build stuff, and they build faster than the T3 engineers. So I built a ton of those engineering stations and had them help build experimental units. Those flying engineers + the unlimited power from the Aeon generator = near instant build times for any units. I ended the game by building a ton of artillery (40+ I think) and just let them reek havoc. It was raining artillery, so beautiful ;)
I love just turtling up and watching the AI throw waves and waves of units at my defenses, while I prepare for a counter offensive. I guess it's kind of like those tower defense games in that way.

I'm not doing much gaming anymore, mostly documents. My current adapter is a PCI-E ATI X1300. Can I expect a visual quality that's just as good if not better? I'm looking for a HD tuner with video in and out. My budget is $150.

Now that Quake Live is in public beta, I can't just jump on and play whenever I want.
Also, CAPCOM you suck for making alternate costumes overpriced DLC. It should not have been DLC in the first place.

Second the fan noise needs to be quiet, if it's going to sit in my studio.

So today I want to talk about salvaging. Last night I decided to drop a few million ISK on a new salvaging ship. When I first learned salvaging, I decided I'd get a Badger II with extended cargoholds, so I could run goods for trading and stuff as well as get my salvage on after missions. While I rarely ran any trade routes, I salvaged a lot and I HATED IT. With 2 high slots I could only have 1 tractor and 1 salvager and that fucking Badger is a slow behemoth. A salvaging op took longer than the missions!
I picked up a Cormorant and outfitted it with 4 tractors and 4 salvagers. Combined with the cost of the destroyer skill and the fitting, I think I dropped about 3.5 million or so. Holy fuck what a difference this ship makes. I only had time to run one mission last night, but from that one salvaging op I picked up 1.1 million ISK in about 5 minutes of work. I didn't put anything else on this thing, I figure if I get attacked I'm basically fucked, but with just the high slots active I saw my cap go down to 50% or so and that's it. I was worried I'd max it out and would have to wait to recharge, and considered picking up some cap rechargers if I needed, but it looks like I'm fine without it. I'm going back at it tonight with a goal of recovering the ISK I spent on this ship and from here on out pure profit!

The cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is reuniting for an episode of "Family Guy," a mash-up made in geek heaven that Fox will air next month.
In the episode titled “Not All Dogs Go to Heaven,” the "Next Gen" crew (Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, Wil Wheaton, Denise Crosby, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes) will provide guest voices as the Griffin family heads to the annual Quahog “Trek” convention.
i don't watch family guy but this sounds like i something i could geek out over

So, after some UPS shennaigans I got my Kindle 2.0 today. So far it's spent more time in my coworker's hands than mine as they all learn about eInk displays and the Kindle features.
On the gaming front:
1. DoW II continues to have random performance issues for me. It will start halting in the middle of campaign games.
2. WoW: My guild attempted our first Undying run last night. The result was: http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/9245/mayhemtheundying.jpg

TOKYO, Feb 25 (Reuters) - A Japanese unit of Switzerland's UBS AG said its computer systems mistakenly placed a $31 billion order for convertible bonds (CB) of videogame maker Capcom Co on Wednesday, but it was able to cancel the trade at no cost.
UBS Securities Japan said that it had intended to place a 30 million yen order to simultaneously buy and sell the bonds in a so-called cross-trade but that its computer system placed a 3 trillion yen ($31 billion) order instead.

Those Hector things have like 20,000 hit points each or something crazy now, luckily their weapons aren't much more powerful than they were before, but it's really hard to take them out when you're being swarmed by 50000 ants and spiders and shit.
