Nintendo Reveals New Wii Controller

Nintendo today updated its Wii website with information on a new, upcoming Wii controller (pictured left).

The "Classic Controller PRO" will add extra shoulder buttons and hand grips to the original classic controller concept. As with the classic controller, the PRO will apparently still need to be wired to a Wii Remote.

The new pad is slated for a vague "summer" release date in Japan. No pricing details were released.

I don't care for the octagon shapes around the sticks. At least i didn't like that playing shooters on the GC. Swiveling becomes an awkward choppy motion.

I already have like 4 of every wii controller. I won't buy this one unless I absolutely had to, and even then, probably just one.

i don't think there are extra shoulder buttons, it looks like they just moved the 2nd shoulder buttons that already exist on the Classic Controller.

Nintendo, I stuck up for you longer than I should have. I defended you when my friends said you were all about money with add-ons and re purposed games. I thought you would surely come through with something creative besides a motion controlled stick. I wish I hadn't been wrong.

i also realize that all the casual gamers of the world still like the Wii, and I'm happy for them. I guess Nintendo did tell us all that this was going to be for them. I suppose I'm just a snotty hardcore gamer.

This is what it should have been anyway. I already have a third party grip that works well but I haven't turned my Wii on since October when we got a 360.

Which reminds me, I have a Wii Classic Controller that I have never used (I bought it to play Zelda, but I ended up just downloading a PC emulator), if anyone wants to buy it off me. Say $10 with whatever for shipping. PM me if you're interested (it costs $20 in the stores).

It's funny to see controller design converge. Looks just like a PS3 or Xbox controller. Two analog sticks, dpad, four buttons on right face, two buttons on top of each side. . It seems the only rough decision in controller design is whether to swap the left analog stick and dpad, and there are certainly some ergonomic and other minor shape differences.
