Evening Reading

Resident Evil 5 just showed up. Still a little bit in denial over how dull I found the first three chapters. Even though I have almost no desire to go back to it, I have to admit I owe the game a full playthrough and a second look. Empire: Total War will probably consume any weekend ambition in that regard, though.

After half an hour trying to beat Seth on easy with Abel I'm still reluctant to give up...but if I take any more I'm likely to chuck the controller at my TV which wouldn't be good.

I've had to take a break and come back to him more than once.

I'm only to the point where I can beat him if I get lucky on easy. First round I can woop his ass then he destroys me 95% of the time. Easiest and very easy aren't much of a problem. I was looking forward to unlocking Seth with the rest of my characters by playing medium, but I don't think that's going to happen!

I am also fucking terrible, but I'm trying to become decent. What's the best way to learn this game? Is it challenges? SP arcade mode? Just going online and playing people?

      • reply
        February 25, 2009 5:49 PM

Play online, doesn't have to be ranked, just player matches. Probably the best way to learn.

        • reply
          February 25, 2009 5:54 PM

The trial challenges can help you learn how to do a character's moves and some combos. I find it sort of helpful when playing a character for the first time.

Finding online matches can be a pain in the ass, if you want to do a few random player matches turn on the arcade request and you'll get interrupted every damn second. Pretty good for getting online games, bad if you actually want to play arcade mode.

Yes, these are great. Experience will tell you when to use them, but the trials will get you some great combos you didn't even know about. If you are a shoto, even tiny things like crouching feirce punch to shoryuken, sammiched together, will help you start slipping in 2 good hits when before you maybe only got 1.

Sagat is one of the best, period. Uppercut, 2x fireball, tiger knee AND easily combo ultra. Guard crushing + cancel = very easy setup for ultra and all non-charging characters SHOULD be feared because of this.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if Capcom didn't perform some patches for tweaks to characters. Sagat just happens to be one nasty character in every game he's been in. SFIV is no exception.

Alrite, what's the deal with custom joysticks? I can pull off most of the combos with the joypad and I have a joystick, but I want ... a real one. Here's the deal, I have 2x Dreamcast import joysticks -- the original and a limited edition Ascii one. I want to gut the DC one and get it working with my ps3. Here is what I know I need:: cluthu pcb.

Is that it? Just remove the old pcb and connect wires to the new pcb? If that works, I'll head down the path of Sanwa stick, buttons, etc. I just want to start with getting my existing one working, then move onto getting some serious modding with it.

Is that it, really? Buttons, joystick, housing, pcb? My dreamcat's current pcb will go in the gutter and I'lll just toss in the cluthu. If I can get the right measurements for the agetek stick, I'll probably just pony up the cash for the Sanwa parts anyhow.

I hear that. I have beaten the hell out of my gamestop generic 360 controller. The shoulder buttons are spongy as hell now and I had to move the feirce attacks to the triggers, and I am developing a deadzone on the analogue stick by wearing that thing out. Gonna have to switch back to the normal 360 controller and deal with the batteries.
