Weekly PC Sales: F.E.A.R. 2 Debuts

6
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin's debut on the United States retail PC charts was good enough for a second place finish, with only Blizzard's frozen behemoth standing in the way of a number one debut.

Following a lengthy stay on the chart, Left 4 Dead dropped out of the top ten during the week of February 8, and the rest of the pack reshuffled accordingly.

As always, the following prices are retail averages:

  1. World Of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King / Blizzard / $37
  2. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin / Monolith / $49
  3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe / EA Maxis / $19
  4. Spore / EA Maxis / $42
  5. World Of Warcraft Battle Chest / Blizzard / $35
  6. The Sims 2 Deluxe / EA Maxis / $3
  7. World Of Warcraft / Blizzard / $17
  8. Call Of Duty: World At War / Treyarch / $43
  9. Fallout 3 / Bethesda / $45
  10. The Sims 2 Apartment Life Exp. Pack / EA Maxis / $19

With such a fine game like that (and no added DRM), I'm not surprised.

Now if they'd only remove the retarded forced widescreen rendering (a la Mirror's Edge), add more effects to slowmo (it's bleak compared to FEAR) and possibly balance brightness better, they'd have a winner on their hands. Brightness is particularly annoying because you can either set the game for distorted colours, or such darkness that you'll never see more than a square inch in the center of your flashlight. FEAR 1, in comparison, always offered correct visibility and you didn't need to use your flashlight nearly as often. FEAR 2, however, removed most of the usage limits on your flashlight - in exchange, they made a pitch black game. And it actually feels worse than Doom 3 there.

You might want to check your monitor settings. Visibility was perfect for me with the default settings.

I know I was exaggerating a bit, you can find the sweet spot after a while, but the game really is darker on an absolute scale than the first one.

"default" meaning that you didn't adjust down the brightness on the game's first launch? Out of habit, I adjusted the brightness down one or two clicks so the pluge pattern looked just a hair brighter than the background, and it looks relatively dark, but with a bit of dynamic range. Still, it's saddening to see another near-useless flashlight that falls off drastically at ten feet.
