Sony: Expect Hybrid Movie/Game Blu-rays This Year
by Nick Breckon, Feb 12, 2009 11:42am PSTHoping to further emphasize the PlayStation 3's capabilities as a game and movie-playing machine, Sony is pushing publishers to combine movies with tie-in videogames on the same Blu-ray disc this year.
"We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc," said PlayStation 3 director of hardware marketing John Koller to VideoBusiness.
"There are a lot of developers who say, we have this game based on a movie, wouldn't it be great to marry these concepts? We will definitely see this stuff this year."
Sony's DVD division was confirmed to be working on a hybrid disc. Koller did not name any specific hybrid Blu-ray projects, but predicted that two or three will be released in 2009.
"This is a value message with the PS3," added Koller. "Consumers can capitalize on the larger amount of space with Blu-ray. There are grander experiences for movies or games."

Now if they start packing BR movies with little but fun arcade games with little to no price increase, their Playstation brand will be in most households around the globe, even though people don't own the Playstation system. But for those who have it's a nice bonus and that tactic might sell them a lot of hardware...

I get that licensed games usually suck, but if you ever do want both how is this a negative thing? It's just another option for interested consumers. For example, I'm sure a lot of people would have bought the Spider-man 2 game + movie on a single disc if it was cheaper than buying them separately - the obvious caveat being if these movies are proprietary in some way and can only be played on PS3s (but realistically, how many PS3 owners own other BR players anyway).

lower tech games that can be played on any bluray player + movie. Probably won't fail too hard, but people wouldn't want to pay more for it.
Situation 2:
medium to high tech games that can be played on any bluray player + movie. I don't know if this is even possible. Can normal blu ray players play games? Probably won't fail too hard, but people will want to pay less than the two would normally cost combined. 60 instead of 80.
Situation 3:
games that can only run on ps3 + movie. Like 2 but more of the same. Maybe they can charge more. Maybe less. This could be confusing to shoppers. They might see "spiderman 4", stop reading, and assume, holy crap, spiderman 4 blu ray costs $70?! I'll just buy the dvd.
All in all, I see this possibly hurting the blu-ray format or at least the ps3. Or it could be very lucrative. They could end up with a "monopoly" of sorts. Depends on how awesome or not the games end up being I suppose.
I could easily see Final Fantasy taking advantage of this. Oh wait, the game already is a movie with boring level grinding inbetween scenes. At least, that's how I left it at #8.

Uhh, I don't think that will go over well.
There are exceptions, but I think we can agree that the majority of movie-based games are not all that great.
