Warhammer Online Dev Confirms Layoffs

13
Following yesterday's rumor that indicated Warhammer Online developer Mythic had let go between 60-130 of its employees, company representatives today confirmed that the studio has indeed downsized.

"Mythic is resizing the team to move from a pre-launch to a post-launch size and remains fully committed to maintaining the trust of the WAR players," reads a company statement sent to Shacknews. Added Mythic: "In no way does this conflict with our commitment to customer service and upcoming content schedule for the game - we remain fully committed to creating and delivering the best WAR experience."

While Warhammer Online boasted over 800,000 subscribers following its September launch, that number has since fallen to around 300,000 according to publisher Electronic Arts.

it doesnt take the same number of people to maintain a game as it does to build one from scratch

(the layoffs still blow hard, but mythic is still a great company, blame EA and business politics)

apparently they got rid of the guy who is in charge of class balancing - he did an average job anyway.. fuckn witch elfs.. but anyway, that would seem to me to be a very important job especially for a game that is launching two new classes soon.

i hope they didnt turf out the guys that have been improving performance in large scale rvr as it has been improving (probably not really.. they are just hard capping and reducing who can play) but yeah you know...it's been a little better.

ONE guy? One guy was in charge of class balancing? How is that ever going to be a good idea? You can't help but be biased, especially when it's your game, you're always going to favour one class.

That's silly. The developer in charge of class balance is the least likely person to be biased. If he shows an obvious bias, it's easy to call him on it and (if he's unwilling to do the job properly) fire him.

On the other hand, when you have a bunch of people working together on class design, you end up with conflicting opinions on class roles ... or you get design-by-committee, where everything is negotiated and compromised to the point of same-ness.

You really do want one designer in charge of overall balance. Even if you have a team of designers, you need one person who gets to decide all the arguments. That's just the reality of development.

As you have put it that way it makes more sense, I just naturally assume multiple inputs are for the best in a situation like that.

There are multiple inputs, but one decision maker. Someone in charge of class balancing would be a fool if he didn't listen to the people he worked with.
