Left 4 Dead Survival Pack DLC Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 05, 2009 10:42am PSTValve announced plans to update its co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead (PC, X360) today, revealing that a "Survival Pack" will be released this spring.
The DLC will include a new multiplayer mode titled Survival, as well as two complete campaigns for the game's existing Versus Mode. No details regarding availability or pricing were announced, but Valve traditionally updates its PC releases for free.
Valve did not specify exactly what new content the Survival Mode will pack, aside from the new mode. The studio previously said that it was working on new scenarios.
A Critic's Choice Edition of the game will head to retail stores at the same time, offering the original game plus the Survival Pack content.
Valve also noted it will release the Software Development Kit for the game this spring. With the SDK, players will be able to create custom campaigns and levels for the game.
Distributor Electronic Arts recently revealed that Left 4 Dead has sold 1.8 million copies at retailers since the game's November 18 release. That number does not include Steam, as Valve does not release those figures publicly, or total worldwide sales.

SDK = HOORAY!
MORE MAPS = HOORAY!
NEW MODE = HOORAY!
Thank you! I love this game, it renewed my interest in PC gaming for the first time since TF2 came out, and a bunch of my gaming buddies and I reconnected because of this game. We love it.
I can't wait for the new stuff, and I can't wait to see what awesome stuff people come up with once the SDK is out. :D

- One scratch or bite and you're infect. No immunities, antidotes, no nothing: once wounded, you will die and become a zombie. It's your team's choice as to whether they kill you instantly or cart you along as a meatshield until you croak.
- Scavenging for food and water.
- In this god awful Winter, I think some sort of body temperature statistic, so you move slower when cold and can die if you don't find fire or blankets soon enough.
- At least the top two dozen most popular firearms in the USA, accurately modelled right down to when and how they will jam/break.
- Melee and improvised weapons. I should be able to smash car windows and use the shards as knives.
- Proper ballistics modelling.
- No health bars. Teamies will be able to tell you your health after checking you over.
- The possibility of painkiller addiction.
- Separate buttons to move each limb, and you fall over if you don't coordinate properly. Also a button to breathe, which must be pressed quicker when tense or running or you collapse.
If Valve are serious with the Survival Pack, they can make Left 4 Dead the single most popular video game in the world. Who wouldn't want to really be in the zombie apocalypse?
Awesome! Spring seems so far away, though, and is so very long.

I swear to Gordon, if I have to pay for Versus maps for Death Toll and Dead Air, I will bust some heads.

And will these new "2 complete campaigns" simply be the existing campaigns that aren't by default multipalyer enabled - Death Toll and Dead Air - that people are playing already anyway? That'd be a kick in the balls, let's hope not.
The best news there is the SDK release in my eyes. Even if Valve aren't going to put priority on creating new single player experiences there should still be an explosion of content from the community.

Now!
It's an.. Update!
Gratis! Awesome. Valvular!
Not 'downloadable content', which implied 'what we should have originally included in the game but were too rushed and lazy to manage, and are now charging you extra for, because we know you're a hungry little thumbstick slut'..

If that's Dead Air and Death Toll or whatever the two are that are currently not OFFICIALLY playable in Versus yet, I'm going to scream (in frustration).

I know a lot of people are already getting bored of the Versus mode because both campaigns just don't have enough legs to carry this game and I fret that people will give up by the time they get around to releasing anything.
The SDK is a nice touch, though. It'll be nice to see what the community is able to do.

I just hope they continue to release smaller updates/fixes to the game until then. Still some nasty bugs in the game.
ps - I'm semi-whinging because I love the game so much x
