Netscape 6 Officially Out

Before I start, I hope everyone realizes that Mozilla and Netscape 6 are completely different things. What you guys are talking about is obviously Netscape 6, which split from Mozilla at Milestone 14. Mozilla is recompiled *every* night from the current source. I believe you can take the Mozilla files and overwrite the Netscape 6 files. Netscape is more than just a browser; it has a whole new package system. If anyone has used Red Hat linux or similar, this is like RPM packages. Also, language support is as easy as installing a few new files. My largest complaint about the Shack posters here is that they whine about how crappy open source is, but, it relies on the community, why do they release beta versions? To find bugs, etc. You help the project 0% by sitting in a gaming website message board whining about it. Tell them. But not before you check the NEWEST release of *Mozilla* for the bug. Be an active participant, the project is only as good as the users helping it.

Does anyone know how I can import my Netscape 4.x bookmarks? I mean, it automatically imports my IE Favorites during installation, but I can't even figure out how to import my Netscape 4.x bookmarks - this is ridiculous, could it be an unsuccessful attempt to bring over some Microsoft fans?

Well, anyone have any ideas how to import old Netscape bookmarks? There aren't any help email addresses.

Is there a screenshot somewhere where I can see what the userinterface looks like? I don't want to dl but I heard, that MS "ripped" it off with IE5 for mac that came out last week. Don't laugh at me - I work on a mac and I like it. IE5 mac is even better than IE5 pc..

Oh my fucking god... what a steaming pile of dog shit. I installed it (goddamn I hate installers that do all the downloading, at least if they make the initial download larger I can just minimize it and do something else), looked at it, and broke out in a full-body rash. Piece of shit didnt even give me an uninstall icon or place itself in Add/Remove, so I just nuked the fucker. I'm gonna format this drive soon anyways, I figure...

Got it running on my Win2k, but its horrendous. It seems to be using Java for everything so its even more slow and sluggish than Netscape 4.5. It crashed within 1 minute. And then there is that user interface that makes Q3A UI look like it was professionally done.

On a side note, are there actually any open source hacker developed programs that come even remotely close to professionally done applications in terms of ease of use and intuitivity ? If there are, I'd like to see them. Because to me at least, OpenSource has become synonymous with ugly interfaces and being a pain to use. I'd like to change that, but every new program I try just reinforces my opinion.

Early beta or not, it's a piece of dogshit. Netscape has screwed the pooch yet again. I'm not surprised, though. In fact, the only thing I'm not surprised about is that they haven't changed the name from Netscape to AOL v6.0

Man, no wonder Netscape waited to release until the judge in the Microsoft case ruled in favor of the Justice Dept. If Netscape had released ANY earlier, there would be absolutely no way that the people at Netscape could have said that they're competitive with Microsoft.

This browser acts like an alpha, not a beta, and certainly not like a final version. Pages load pretty fast, but try scrolling around, it's just crawls.

IE5 is flawless in comparision.

These days I dont care if its a beta, alpha, or gamma in the case of Ultima 9 and Force Commander, if you release something to the public it deserves what it gets in comments. Its another story if your doing some private beta testing group and its leaked, but this public releasing BS doesnt give you, that "My program has beta in it's title so shuddup!" attitude.

According to the USA Today the Netscape 6 being released today is the official version :-)

This doesn't seem to be substantially changed from the leaked version that was out a bit ago. Yeah, it's ugly all right. Window switching is terrifically slow compared to 4.7 (which I uninstalled, then reinstalled when I got fed up with the 6.0 leak). It is undeniably the fasting page-loader I have seen, especially when you're dealing with shit servers like the ones UGO uses (loading image from ads.ugo.com anyone?). 4.7 would always wait to display the shack until all the images where loaded, but this goes for the text first, then rearranges the page with the images in place. No more of that "resize the window, reload the page" crap.
