now most importantly, thank you very much everyone for the congrats. i couldnt possibly be more thrilled with how this turned out. i am still pretty much in shock for what this all means for life in general. it is crazy.
so i wrote up a thanks to the moderators for all the hard work they do that was fairly lengthy, but i think this one part of that will give you guys a good idea of where i am personally.
---
Why now?
To give you guys an idea of what really made this choice clear to me, a little while ago my wife's surprise 30th birthday party was being held up in Pennsylvania. This birthday had some pretty special meaning to her and I knew how elated she would be with the surprise. I was dying to tell her because of the stuff she was dealing with but I knew it would make the surprise that much sweeter.
Two days before flying out I had to call her family and cancel because of this job. My wife had her surprise birthday party without her husband because I had to stay home and work on my internet blog.
Why am I working these insane hours while life outside passes me by? Will growing my company bottom line really reward me more than time with family and loved ones? I was given a chance to change my life, so I did.

The most simple way to put it is this: A guy named Edward came along and pitched the idea of Fileshack to Steve. I had been helping Steve with minor graphics and ruining his brand for a few months at the time. They needed someone to design Fileshack in a hurry, and me having no standards or business integrity took it on as a favor. I kept doing design work for Steve but since Fileshack was a Speakeasy partnership, Speakeasy also started hiring me for things.
This got me hooked up with a few remarkable people at Speakeasy, namely the Speakeasy founder who I went and started a business with. I'm still friends with all of those people today. It pains me to admit that I get to design my life the way I want largely due to my homophobic and racist posts here, but it's the truth. I'm so incredibly happy for Steve and Maarten. This has been a long time coming and it was really hard to keep quiet about because it's such good drama!
So thanks Shack, thank you for everything you contributed to my ridiculous professional life. If gamefly still wants me to shit this place up with poor design decisions, I will hire pup to do it for me and take the credit as usual.
Steve especially - you dropped my name to so many people that it no doubt supported not just one, but several drug habits. I've billed people all over the world for mediocre design because of you and even though our projects together are sometimes quite stressful, you've been great to work with.

Its kinda like the US going to war with Vietnam over Communism. Ho Chi Mihn (hereafter "Ho") came to the US to ask for help way before he went to the Commies. The US rejected Ho in his plea for help, then later killed a bunch of people because Ho got help from another government whom the US directly opposed. In this example, Shacknews.com is the US, your are Ho Chi Mihn, Gamefly is Communism, and the shackers are the Vietnamese people given to Communism by their leader. At least Ho stuck around for Communism, instead of going to the Bahamas or something.
But really, congratulations. You will be missed.

I stumbled across shugashack.com one day while I was searching for the latest Counterstrike beta download (which I didn't find here), opened up "stuff that sucks," and I was hooked for good. I spent a lot of time here, made some friends (like in real life and everything wtf), and probably annoyed some people, too. This site has been a good place for us nerds to just be ourselves, without TOO much fear of the banhammer :D
Steve, Maarten, Pup, Sander, Haiku, Nick, Remo, whoever else I can't think of, you really did a good thing with this place, and really, I thank you for all the effort you put into it.
Steve! Be happy! Congratulations!
now here's to another thirteen years of awesome!

I know there are some of you that hate my fucking guts, and some of you just hate my politics, and some of you have actually played games with me for years and know me as a good fun loving guy. I've never been to a shackmeet. I only know one shacker in real life and he moved to seattle. But the shack has been a part of my life for a long time and it is a part I don't want to let go of.
Apart from the jokes and the slumber parties, we help each other out. I have given away games for the fun of it, or because people help me out with stuff in my life. We have exchanged memories and troubling times in our lives. We have gone to see each other when we were sick, and comforted others when they have lost their loved ones. We have seen people come and go and come back again. We have endured pointy elbows, tight jeans, living life in the danger zone and much more.
I can't tell you how many laughs I get out of this site every day from people like boring gegtik, dognose, Phil etc. There have been many times when I needed an answer to a question that could not be easily found that the shack has pulled through for me and likewise for others.
I find that this is a Home on the internet for me. It has been a welcoming place in a bastion crap. The Shack has been filtered and wrung out of shit and left with the honed mound of dung we call home. Its not perfect, but it has done us well. We owe it to ourselves and our community to make sure that we are able to keep it intact in a form that most resembles its present state.
We are the shack, where ever we are, be it at the shacknews or elsewhere.
To all of you that are leaving: You guys have made me a better person. I am in no doubt of that. I understand principles, and I wish you well in your adventures to come.
To all of you that are staying: Thank you. You guys are awesome. Please to be conversating and playing games with you.

I don't just mean classics, like Casablanca, but movies where the script really elevates it beyond everything and makes it the movie it is.
My personal picks for great scripts are:
Adaptation
Glengarry Glen Ross
When Harry Met Sally
I want to watch some really greatly scripted movies.

Since I already pay monthly for Gamefly (x2) do I get a lightning bolt now?
Seriously I'm very happy for Steve. I know exactly where he is coming from. I used to run a huge monthly LAN party (100 up to 300 seats) but one day I decided I had to get out and spend time with my family. I got paid and turned the keys over to incredibly capable people. The community complained "It won't be the same, we are losing the only real LAN." But I was sure it would be fine. That thing didn't last 2 months.

How much should I get tipped when a large gaming company when they buy out my website?
But seriously, how are things going to work now? Are we still going to have mods? Are they going to be mods set up by gamefly? What is the government going to do to help the unemployed mods?

I'm getting really sick of my Microsoft Windows Mail for my work email. What do you use? Not really looking for any features in particular. Just something that's clean and will function properly.

I'm not even paying for this Lightning Bolt. I signed up for it in the past and canceled, yet the lightning bolt still remained. I don't have shackspace or the higher tier fileshack download service but the lightning bolt remains.
Where do we go now? : /

*Another* way to bypass the UAC whitelist has been discovered, more serious and difficult to fix -- especially with Microsoft saying there won't be another beta -- than the previous one that itself was very easy to exploit.

If there's something horrible like fry not being able to say dongs or conandan not being able to rail against the smelly hippy democrat machine, we'll let you know but I think that's about as likely as people not making pop tart or wooden shoe jokes towards Maarten. Frankly, there are plenty of Big Corporate Websites that have online communities that discuss more than just games, and I'm going to be my usual inelegant, blunt person and say we have something special over those places.
Furthermore, I think it's just silly to assume that the Gamefly Powers That Be wouldn't know what they were getting into in buying this place, as opposed to some homogenized boring bunch of plebeians, and they are fine, if not better than fine about having Shackers. I in fact truthfully think this will present us with even bigger and better opportunities for our community, as long as we can both keep sucking as much as we do, and more importantly not sucking as we do so much better.
Just keep doing what you were doing. We share your concerns--we don't want drastic changes in the comments either. I've been coming here since high school when GLQuake, ISDN and hand-written IP lists were cutting edge, have seen so many years pass since then, just got married a bit more than a month ago, and really hope to keep being a part of this amazing community till... well, those are bridges far in the future and hopefully ones we'll cross together. Steve and Maarten have done right by us in the past, and we're confident that they're still doing what's best.
