Unreal Tournament 3 Retail Steam Registration Opens

82
Valve today enabled free Steam registration for Unreal Tournament 3, allowing owners of Epic's multiplayer shooter to prepare for the the large upcoming patch.

The update will bring over 50 Steamworks Achievements, along with "a host of new features and enhancements in AI, Server Browsing, Demo Recording, Mod Support, and more." A more detailed list of the upcoming changes is available here. Steam registration is only required for the achievements. Registration is a simple matter of clicking the main Steam menu option "Games" and selecting "Activate a product on Steam."

Any CD key should be eligible for activation, including versions purchased from other digital distribution services. Also note that the activation will require a new installation of the game, so users will want to delete the old one in order to avoid pesky hard drive bloat. [Thanks Visceral Monkey.]

Is the steam treatment working? Has this game come back from the dead?

It would be a great workaround to what I keep hearing to be a really bad server browser.

When will developers stop using gamespy? There hasnt been one game in the last 4 years that had a gamespy browser built in that didnt have a bunch of retarded issues on launch, and 99% of them still have issues now.

I'm sure a few devs even went so far as to remove the gamespy browser and build their own in with a patch later on.

Thought they were revamping the server browser in this patch.

Yeah they are - anyone know if they are using Steamworks this time?

With the option of using steam as a browser...I'd see that as generally better all around...I miss All Seeing Eye to be honest...I just prefer using external browsers for most stuff.

Qtracker and HLSW are both pretty close in functionality. They don't refresh servers near-instantly like ASE did, but I've been using qtracker for years now and am quite happy with it.

I also find XFire to be decent when I occasionally make use of it.

The patch hasn't been released yet, I think this is just in anticipation of the patch.

Did the game get more fun since the demo? I think everyone played the UT series to death... The assault game mode was the only thing keeping UT2k4 alive. Then UT3 demo came out ... meh.

They needed to go more TF2. Where you don't have to understand how to run a map to be the victor. That your skill set doesn't have to be the best at everything (if you're relying on weapon pickups). There's a whole different dimension than just running and gunning.

Maybe it wasn't that... Assault has a lot of depth... but I think the demo underwhelmed people so it was
DOA when so many other games came out.

The demo was terrible. Retail was much better but it still lacked that spark. Hopefully these changes can help kick start it again.

I always thought Onslaught was the best part of 2k4...Assault didn't do it for me...it was basically just a rush through some objectives that never lasted very long. It was too linear and after a while people figured out how to beat the map in the blink of an eye so that matches just weren't fun...Onslaught at least had some give and take.
