Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Jan 28, 2009 5:10am PSTNick and I finally got around to beating that Resident Evil 5 demo last night. We'd played the Japanese demo a while back, but I'll admit, we got our asses kicked by the zombie horde--we couldn't beat either stage, no matter how many times we tried.
Perhaps that was because we were playing a lot of Left 4 Dead at the time and trying to stick together instead of splitting up. But hey, this time, we beat both Resident Evil 5 scenarios with ease, spending most of the stages split up instead of side-by-side.
I'm really looking forward to the final game for both single-player and co-op play, the latter being something I'm generally not that into, so hurry up already March 13. And here's hoping for a good Wednesday--I think we could all use some extra happiness.

I have a question that's bugged me for years and I thought I might get some interesting ideas on how to handle a problem I run into quite a bit. I'm writing this using C# in VS2008 and didn't know if someone here might have a solution to this problem.
I have an object Foo. Foo has a Property named Bar. When Bar changes, it raises the BarChanged Event. How do you handle a situation where you want to update Bar, but want to suppress the resulting BarChanged event from happening? Do you have a second Property named something like BarSuppressEvents or something stupid like that?

Did anyone check out that Toribash on Wiiware article? ( http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/56964 ) I just started playing the PC version last night after reading the article.
Toribash is an awesome, turn based fighter with unlimited moves. Think Mortal Kombat crossed with QWOP. A turned based Sumotori Dreams, with dismemberment and blood. The PC version is available for free here: http://www.toribash.com/
You see 3D stick figure fighters with spheres for muscles and rectangles for bones. Each turn you can set each muscle into one of 4 states: contracting, expanding, holding or relaxing. You get a little preview of what your changes will do by a little 'ghost' image of you character moving, allowing you to see the effects of your changes. When you end your turn, time move forward by 1/10 of a second and you can change your muscle states again. The game ends when a player is disqualified or time runs out (default is 50 turns, but the rules are alterable). You can even save recordings of the match and replay them later. There are also mods (many come with the game) that alter the play field, or give the fighters weapons. Video of game replays (not exactly the gameplay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr_8Bha75pk
It is possible it dismember the players, and blood spatters upon good hits (and you get animeish blood sprays with dismemberment). There is a tutorial, single player and apparently there is also multiplayer. it seems winning matches give you credits that you can use to alter the appearance of your character
After playing single player a bit, I was able to decapitate and remove one of the opponents legs, although, I broke my wrist in the process. Here is the replay: http://troz.shackspace.com/broken%20wrist%20decap.rpl This next replay was using the TwinSwords4 mod, and I cut / kick the enemy to pieces: http://troz.shackspace.com/sword%20gibs.rpl
Try it out and post cool replays below!

I just watched this episode of Fringe on Hulu.com.
"Olivia, Walter and Peter are called in to investigate the death of a car salesman who was found in a pool of "goo," exactly like another man across the country."
I have one question though... was this last night's episode or was this last week's episode?

I launch the game from Steam and it pops up "Preparing to launch..." for about half a second and then goes away. Doesn't seem to do anything else. I don't see any process start up or anything that indicates it is doing something. I've tried rebooting, but to no avail. Anyone had anything like this happen? This is on a fresh install of XP.

Anyone ever had one? They just opened in Wichita recently and were profiled on the news. I don't think I'll ever bother as they pour a good 1/4c of butter (or fake butter) on each burger, and hot dog (wtf do you need butter on a hot dog for?), and on their buns and shrooms and onions and it just looks disgusting.
I also don't get what "smashing" is going to do for flavor.

What are great examples of large corporate websites that are easy to navigate, are well organized, and are beautiful to look at even thought they are collecting very uneven kinds of information?
I think Apple is obviously a good example (in comparison with similar companies). Some parts of Sony's web domain are good too.
Interested to hear what shack web pros think about this.

July, 2003: Masturbation 'cuts cancer risk'
They found those who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to develop the cancer. The protective effect was greatest while the men were in their 20s. Men who ejaculated more than five times a week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life.

Six years later, January, 2009: High sex drive in youth tied to prostate cancer
A new research by Cambridge University has revealed that men who have regular sexual intercourse and masturbate often while in their 20s and 30s, are more likely to develop prostate cancer.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Health__Science/High_sex_drive_tied_to_prostate_cancer/articleshow/4039133.cms
---
These scientists just need to be quiet with their "research." It comes off as one sick joke, man. How many innocent young men who cared about their health took their initial findings to heart and spent the last 6 years masturbating furiously with hopes that it would help them avoid prostate cancer one day? And now, after all that work, they're being told that they may have in fact sentenced themselves to DEATH. It's just uncool, dudes.

So, I played a couple games (comp stomping) and I kind of like it. Graphics are nice and it's pretty fast paced. I like that. I hate RTS games where it takes forever to do stuff.
That said, is there going to be any kind of base building in this game or just the power generators and the HQ? Right now, the gameplay while fun like I said, seems a little bare for MP.
Also, anybody want to play a couple games with me so I can get a feel of what it's like to play with real people? I don't usually play with real people, but I figure, what the hell, right?
My gamertag is AmbienceDesign, same as it is for Xbox LIVE.

These things would work fine in a traditional RE where you're not getting bumrushed constantly. While they've evolved the enemies a bunch, they haven't given much thought to the controls. Such a disappointment :(
