Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Jan 27, 2009 1:45am PSTThe dawn of a new day brings with it the birth of a new chatty, a shining bastion of hope and opportunity. Oh, and since it's Tuesday, we also get some Fallout 3 DLC. Yay.
I had considered staying up late to play through that new Fallout 3 quest, but my plans were dashed as I (accidentally) fell asleep on the couch around 10:30 PM. I feel old :(

What: A Shack Pitboss game of epic proportions!
When: The game will start in about a month. Exact date is TBD. The game will probably take about 10-16 months to complete.
Who: Anyone! Well, kind of. Anyone that has participated in one of the previous games and dropped out without warning will need to do some begging to be accepted in to this game. Dropouts can ruin the game so if you sign up for this game you need to be dedicated to play it to completion to the best of your ability.
Huh? Pitboss is a way of playing Civilization 4 where a persistent server runs all the time and each player must log in once per day to take their turn. Turns take minutes to play in the early game and perhaps up to 20-30 minutes in the late game if you have a lot going on. The game is "simultaneous" so each player can log in at whatever time is convenient for them; it's not like play-by-email where we play in sequence. This is why a 32-player game can actually work in this format. It's a very rewarding experience but does require a level of discipline to stick with it. The early turns can be especially boring where you are just logging in to move a single (or none!) unit I find the satisfaction by the end of the game is more than worth it. Even though I have not won any of the 4 Pitboss games I have played in, they have been the most fun games of Civ4 I have played.
Details
The game will require Beyond the Sword. If you have Civ4 but not BtS then you are doing yourself a great disservice anyway and should buy it.
Other details are up for discussion! Map type, no tech trading/brokering, house rules, map size, etc etc should all be discussed in replies if you have an opinion about it!
The game natively supports up to 16 players, but there are modded dlls that increase the limit to 32 players. If there is enough interest we will use such mods to play a game of epic proportions. If there are even more than 32 signups then I will split it in to two different games.
HOW TO SIGN UP
Reply here with your top two leader choices (real men play random ;) ) and copy/paste this in your reply:
"I am fully planning on playing a turn a day for a year or more. Barring any unexpected personal life changes I will do my best to play a single turn every day. If for some reason I can no longer play my turns I will to the best of my ability find a replacement by asking on the Shack for someone to take over."
I'm not kidding; if you don't have that in your reply then I will assume you haven't read these directions and if you can't read a single thread then you certainly don't have the attention span to play a year+ game!

I'm unsure right now. I enjoyed the other game but am drained.
Also Dirge is scary I surrender immediately.
