Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Jan 27, 2009 1:45am PSTThe dawn of a new day brings with it the birth of a new chatty, a shining bastion of hope and opportunity. Oh, and since it's Tuesday, we also get some Fallout 3 DLC. Yay.
I had considered staying up late to play through that new Fallout 3 quest, but my plans were dashed as I (accidentally) fell asleep on the couch around 10:30 PM. I feel old :(

What: A Shack Pitboss game of epic proportions!
When: The game will start in about a month. Exact date is TBD. The game will probably take about 10-16 months to complete.
Who: Anyone! Well, kind of. Anyone that has participated in one of the previous games and dropped out without warning will need to do some begging to be accepted in to this game. Dropouts can ruin the game so if you sign up for this game you need to be dedicated to play it to completion to the best of your ability.
Huh? Pitboss is a way of playing Civilization 4 where a persistent server runs all the time and each player must log in once per day to take their turn. Turns take minutes to play in the early game and perhaps up to 20-30 minutes in the late game if you have a lot going on. The game is "simultaneous" so each player can log in at whatever time is convenient for them; it's not like play-by-email where we play in sequence. This is why a 32-player game can actually work in this format. It's a very rewarding experience but does require a level of discipline to stick with it. The early turns can be especially boring where you are just logging in to move a single (or none!) unit I find the satisfaction by the end of the game is more than worth it. Even though I have not won any of the 4 Pitboss games I have played in, they have been the most fun games of Civ4 I have played.
Details
The game will require Beyond the Sword. If you have Civ4 but not BtS then you are doing yourself a great disservice anyway and should buy it.
Other details are up for discussion! Map type, no tech trading/brokering, house rules, map size, etc etc should all be discussed in replies if you have an opinion about it!
The game natively supports up to 16 players, but there are modded dlls that increase the limit to 32 players. If there is enough interest we will use such mods to play a game of epic proportions. If there are even more than 32 signups then I will split it in to two different games.
HOW TO SIGN UP
Reply here with your top two leader choices (real men play random ;) ) and copy/paste this in your reply:
"I am fully planning on playing a turn a day for a year or more. Barring any unexpected personal life changes I will do my best to play a single turn every day. If for some reason I can no longer play my turns I will to the best of my ability find a replacement by asking on the Shack for someone to take over."
I'm not kidding; if you don't have that in your reply then I will assume you haven't read these directions and if you can't read a single thread then you certainly don't have the attention span to play a year+ game!

Reading Nick's SimCity 5 "interview" (with no offense to Nick, obviously they didn't want to talk about much) finally gave me the motivation to take these screenshots. I donated $30 (if I remember correctly) to Simtropolis and they send you a STEX DVD which contains a shitload of custom made user content. There's also a CD that was released previously that they'll bundle in if you give them $45. The DVD contains everything from ploppables, to growable lots, utility buildings, rewards, mods, etc.
The quality is outstanding, but the organization (beyond the categories) of the DVD leaves much to be desired. There's no way of searching or ordering the content, and tracking down the dependencies of certain lots is a huge pain in the ass. Some of those are on the DVD as well, but not all. Basically a dependency is something like a custom texture pack that is referenced by other lots. But the stuff on there is rated and comes with a description. The author also mentions what dependency is used, and thankfully there are some mega packs that will take care of a lot of the popular ones.
Not all of the lots need these dependencies. I had a PetSmart in my city (before the game crashed, so no pictures of that sorry) that required no outside dependency. There's Blockbusters, Cracker Barrels, K-Marts, all sorts of real world stores and corporations have been worked into the game. It's just a matter of dragging and dropping some files into the SimCity 4 plugin folder and you're typically good to go.
It's almost like SimCity 4.5, and it does breathe some new life into the game. I yearn for a proper SimCity 5, but until then I'm still pretty content with 4 and the custom content. And I haven't even installed an eighth of what's on the disc yet.
Pictures and a little more on what I mentioned above in reply...

Video games, booze, music and driving aimlessly are all nice, but i've kinda been itching to find myself back in the paper, since I used to read every night for at least an hour, and books are the one area the woman in my life hasn't touched so I can actually escape for awhile. I'm gonna be plowing through a lot of pages, anything is welcome.

My HTPC is a Pentium 4 3.2GHz w/ HT and 1GB RAM. It's one of these compact HPs which require low profile video cards: http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/L10927852a.jpg which fits right on the shelves with my other electronics. My TV is a 37" 1080p Westinghouse LCD 37w3 monitor. (I sit close enough that it's a decent size)
I am very pleased with the results. The drive works as it should, and the video offloading by the 4550 seems fantastic. Running Pitch Black on HD-DVD or The Dark Knight on Blu-ray, the CPU utilization is only around 20% and it never spikes to anywhere close to max. On the HD-DVD I'm watching now at least, it seems to never spike at all. The performance is even better than graphs in reviews led me to believe. (they always used some decent C2D or even quad CPU too) The first thing I did after some basic screen calibration was watch some IMAX Dark Knight in 1080p glory. Damn that's some glorious video.
I'm also pleased with the PowerDVD 7 software that came with the LG drive. I've used older versions before. After applying a free update it told me about, it plays both formats perfectly and seems to support the latest blu-ray BD-Live stuff.
I haven't tried any games yet. The 4550 definitely isn't a gamer GPU but it will still be worlds better than the old card the thing had. I'll probably try Psychonauts with a controller or something.
