It was interesting for me to try it, because I thought the original FEAR sucked yet so many people were praising it. I really couldn't get why.
So, I've tried the FEAR 2 demo, and even though the graphics seem much better than the original, I couldn't have been less excited by it.
Seriously, I find it pretty funny. I tend to like many other games and stuff, but for some reason FEAR and me never seem to get along. Even the sequel, haha.
It boggles my mind how so many people are really excited about it... Jeez. I thought it was so lame. >.<
What's so special about the mech part at the end anyway? I'm sure it's been done before, in those mechwarrior games and others.

- The engine is fucking incredible. Amazing graphics at an incredible framerate. Top notch. It does not get better. I have an 8800gt, e6300 c2d, 2gb ram. >45 fps the whole time with max settings on 1920x1200 (no AA), and usually I was pegging 60 fps.
- Animations, especially reload animations, are stellar. Gore is awesome, well done. Didn't care for the enemy design though; the enemies felt entirely and ridiculously generic.
- The game installed into Vista's "game explorer" incorrectly and I had to manually fix the link.
- The ingame "data files" on the PDA do not scroll with the scroll wheel. WTF? SERIOUSLY? Consolitis without a doubt. Having to go click on the scrollbar made me realize just how little I ever use them in windows. The PDA also has you use ARROW KEYS instead of the WASD movement keys... also retarded. It feels kind of halfassed.
- Could not set mouse sensitivity low enough. I had it all the way on the bottom and it still felt too fast.
- Not scary. I found the scary parts more annoying than anything else, and it reminded me of why I never really played FEAR. I just don't enjoy that kind of BS. I would much rather have real plot development in the form of mini cutscenes than have OOOOO BE AFRAID!!! Seriously this kind of interruption to the gameplay is easily just as annoying as Bungie's OMG CORTANA VISIONS to me
- Slowmo was completely awesome.
- Pacing felt terrible. Maybe this was because I was on easy (default) but it felt very much nonstop and hectic without any exploring or downtime, and I did not enjoy that. I very quickly collected tons of weapons and encountered score of enemies and it just never really let up much, between the OMG GHOSTS ARE ATTACKING and then real enemies and then ghosts... I was constantly being attacked with no breaks.
- The mech part was amazing and brought the engine out even more. This is a very technically impressive game.
So overall, very very technically impressive. I enjoy the filters and the graphics style. I love the visor effect. I love the guns and animations, and even the gunplay. But I still didn't really find myself enjoying the game, and I really can't put my finger on why. I don't think it's possible that it could be entirely pacing, but who knows. Can't decide if I want to buy it or not, which probably means I won't.

(Even though they took out leaning, meh. I can live with it.)

Leaning has been removed but I personally don't mind all that much. The rest of the controls are all there as well as the ability to change the fire mode on your weapon (automatic/burst/single), which I don't recall being in the original game but maybe I'm just not remembering correctly. The controls feel very responsive, and the "consolitis" effect of the game being developed on multiple platforms is almost nonexistent.
My only complaint is that it seemed way too easy, even playing on the hardest difficulty, but maybe that's because it's the first level.

not really, amazing demo, just someone didn't do a bug hunt after someone goes through and rebinds everything (figured this would be a given since there are a growing number of EDSF players these days).
Rebinding use to something other than E creates a problem when using the mech (holding down E is to get out of the mech by default - E is the use key). Makes sense, but when I rebind T to the use key, and e for forward, it's not making that connection when i'm in the mech. Shame on you Monolith, ruined an otherwise amazing demo.

But I continue to be amazed that people actually find this series scary. The sequence with the invisible flickering being was pretty good, but mostly it seems like a more accurate title for this series would be S.T.A.R.T.L.E. The atmosphere just isn't there.

Some things I like: Clean, efficient engine. I was pleasantly surprised at the smooth frames I was getting on my machine. Great sound effects. Awesome firefights. Punchy feel to the weapons. I like being able to bust doors open with the melee. This mechanic was introduced in one of the expansion packs for the first game and I love it. It really makes you feel like a badass.
The only thing I miss is the leaning. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing as a dumbass grunt because my character doesn't know how to use cover + lean and shoot. Instead he engages in firefights the same way a rock head would - walk around and shoot. It feels really dated. I hope they put leaning back into a patch. It would make combat more fun and tactical.
Other than that, great job guys. This is a definite buy for me.
Pros:
-The gun design is absolutely fantastic.
-Combat system is top notch, just like the original.
-Atmosphere and mood are as good as if not better then the original.
-Mech Combat is enthralling and superbly done.
Cons:
-Stale items, no major updates or changes
-Not much backstory or covering of any story.

Other than that... pretty fun stuff. Will have to check it out.
If so, demo is really all you need.

Overall the scares are better with Monolith having refined their art with the Condemned series, and the weapons are just as awesome. I cannot wait to use the nailgun again. Day 1 purchase for me.
