F.E.A.R. 2 Demo Released

by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 22, 2009 5:30am PST

As had been expected, a F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin PC demo is now available and can be downloaded from FileShack. An Xbox 360 demo has been released as well, now available from the console's online marketplace, with a PS3 demo due later today.

The demo is a 1.76GB download and offers a glimpse at what you can expect from Monolith's horror action game sequel, which hits stores February 10 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • Awesome demo. Very intense atmosphere. The scares have been kicked up several notches. They went a bit nuts on the shader effects, with some impressive results.

Leaning has been removed but I personally don't mind all that much. The rest of the controls are all there as well as the ability to change the fire mode on your weapon (automatic/burst/single), which I don't recall being in the original game but maybe I'm just not remembering correctly. The controls feel very responsive, and the "consolitis" effect of the game being developed on multiple platforms is almost nonexistent.

My only complaint is that it seemed way too easy, even playing on the hardest difficulty, but maybe that's because it's the first level.

  • This didn't do much for me. Everything from the weapons to the movement felt floaty to me. The firefights didn't feel as intense as the first game's either. Great engine though, and I'm glad that they seem to have done a better job of combining the combat with the horror aspects than they did the first time around.

But I continue to be amazed that people actually find this series scary. The sequence with the invisible flickering being was pretty good, but mostly it seems like a more accurate title for this series would be S.T.A.R.T.L.E. The atmosphere just isn't there.

  • Overall I'd say this demo is a winner.

Some things I like: Clean, efficient engine. I was pleasantly surprised at the smooth frames I was getting on my machine. Great sound effects. Awesome firefights. Punchy feel to the weapons. I like being able to bust doors open with the melee. This mechanic was introduced in one of the expansion packs for the first game and I love it. It really makes you feel like a badass.

The only thing I miss is the leaning. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing as a dumbass grunt because my character doesn't know how to use cover + lean and shoot. Instead he engages in firefights the same way a rock head would - walk around and shoot. It feels really dated. I hope they put leaning back into a patch. It would make combat more fun and tactical.

Other than that, great job guys. This is a definite buy for me.

  • I played this last week on the PS3 and today on 360 and PC. If you are going to go with one go with the PC version, but if you have a crappy PC, then the 360 version is the way to go. The controls just feel better on the 360 controllers, especially because the triggers are better than the PS3 ones. Leaning has been taken out, and after replaying half of F.E.A.R. last night on extreme, the game does feel a bit easier this time on the hardest difficulty, although it is just a demo so I cannot say for sure. However, the same outstanding action is here as well as the great AI. The AI is just as good in the first game, with them flanking, flushing, creating cover by opening car doors or flipping tables, and using suppressing fire. I am dissapointed that the replicas do not speak to each other. I used to love hearing them saying `Flush him out`` and knowing I need to get my ass in gear to get the fuck out before I die, hearing them coordinate a flank, or hearing that they have `3 men down`or that they need reinforcements, meaning that although you cannot see them they are down to either 1 or 2 in their team. It did not make the game easier, if anything it really helped at the higher difficulties because the AI was do damn awesome. Hopefully we see it in the full game, but the demo shows it as being removed, which is extremely sad. The only time I heard them speak was right at the beginning of the demo when a replica kills a civilian.

Overall the scares are better with Monolith having refined their art with the Condemned series, and the weapons are just as awesome. I cannot wait to use the nailgun again. Day 1 purchase for me.
