Multi-platform 2008 Bestsellers Revealed by NPD

A new compilation of 2008 sales data released by the NPD shows that despite challenge from Madden and GTA, Wii Play was the best-selling overall piece of gaming software in the US last year.

The overall US software leaders in 2008:

Wii Play -- 5.28 million
Madden NFL '09 -- 5.25 million
Grand Theft Auto IV -- 5.22 million
Mario Kart Wii -- 5.00 million
Call of Duty: World at War -- 4.63 million

According to MTV, this data includes PC versions of the applicable games, including Grand Theft Auto IV.

Wii Play doesn't deserve to be on the list. It wouldn't have sold half as many copies if it didn't come with the controller. I wonder how many copies of any of the other games on the list would have been sold if they also came bundled with free wireless controllers.

Wii Play wouldn't have sold that amount without the Wii-Remote being bundled with it. NPD fails on many levels.

Call of Duty is surprising. I guess this means that we'll have lots of WWII games to come! I, for one, completely embrace the idea that we should have WWII games until the end of time. WWII was the greatest war humans will ever fight. And by great I mean most grand.

Why don't they just put Wii sports on there while they're at it?
