Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jan 19, 2009 6:00pm PSTSo I somehow convinced Nick to install Windows 7 on his main desktop PC and I think it
has been worth it! He is going through all the pain now of figuring out how to get a few
programs working. Once he is done I'll take the plunge, but that sucker has to suffer
first!

Ip Man was Bruce Lee's Wing Chun teacher. Apparently he was some sort of unstoppable badass. In this scene he literally pummels japanese soldiers into the ground, 10 at once.
Brutal stuff. Don't piss off Ip Man.

could it be that:
the humans have a poly-theistic view (many gods) due to the fact that their religion is somehow based around the mythology of the final 5, implying that:
- the final 5 recreated the colonies somehow
- which created the mythology of a genesis from many makers
whereas the cylons have the mythology of single god, possibly referring to a single maker, ie one person responsible for their creation (inventor, the early hybrid that adama encountered, etc).
thoughts? I may not be dead on, but I think it follows somewhat...

Ok, how do I independantly get my hearing checked? I know I've wrote about this before and I did get it professionally checked out. I went to my Hmo and they sent me to this place where I was in a quiet little booth with head phones. I had no problem hearing the complete rang of beeps and they reported my hearing is fine. I'm not convinced. I'm sure range wise I am fine. I've been finding it really difficult to make out what people are saying. I really can't stand talling over the phone. It's difficult to understand what the other person is saying. This is over several phones so it isn't that I have a bad phone. in movies I've been listening to everything in stereo sound because as soon as I go to 7.1, I can't make out what people are saying.

Looks like the patch is today! I've been looking forward to this one for a while now, patch notes can be found a bit down the page here: http://www.worldofraids.com/
I also noticed this little gem on the notes:
World of Warcraft now supports 3-D imaging. Visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/GeForce_3D_Vision_Main.html for more information.
Not sure how well it works, but there are lots of things in WoW that would totally rock in 3D.

My girlfriend made a pair of pyjamas for marmite as a Christmas present out of dollar bill pattern fabric. Of course I said they were totaly awesome and I wanted a pair.
When I got home today I found these http://www.shackpics.com/files/obamies_41me5ovapvht9652guqm.jpg on my bed with a little note:

I'm having a bit of trouble with an airbrush i bought a few years ago. Its a tiny one, attached to a small compressor, designed for graphic designers, back in the day before photo shop and things like that.
Anyway like i said its been a good few years since i last used it, and i remember feeling at the time it was a bit of a pain to use, but i managed to do a huge piece with it regardless. But this time round it seems completely useless, and i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong.
I cleaned the thing thoroughly in warm soapy water and it looks as good as new. At first the paint was coming through stuttered and splattering over my work surface but since cleaning it seems to be coming through much smoother. The problem is it seems to be taking an absoloute AGE to make any progress with it, to cover something the size of an A4 bit of paper with a nice coating would take me all day.
So what i'm asking is 1 does this seem normal for a small air brush, and am I remembering my previous use of it incorrectly and its always been this crap? 2 What consistency should the paint be that i'm using? I'm just using normal Acrylic paint watered waaaay down to a milky consistency, should it be thicker?
What am i doing wrong? Do i need to buy another airbrush and probably a bigger compressor?

First I cut my heel open on the door of my shower this morning. Not having any first aid stuff at home I had to hobble to the chemist and buy some gauze and tape.
Then I got the blood from that all over my new jeans (luckily they were dirt cheap)
Then I found out that approval on the work I am supposed to do today hasn't come through which means I will have to do it tomorrow and I already have a ton of stuff for tomorrow that I can't move earlier.
THEN for lunch I just accidentally put too much reggae reggae jerk sauce in my sandwich and made it practically inedible.
>:( Everything just seems to be going wrong and I want to go back to bed, wake up again and start over.

"Explain risk taking or problem behaviors that you engaged in during adolescence?"
I just got done typing the third page and I realized that I was a huge violent asshole as a child. I beat up a lot of people and most of them were for stupid reasons. I use to do and say very mean things to people. Her paper is starting to make me feel ashamed of who I was and question how I became the fun loving nice friendly Quasi-Buddhist I am today.

According to law this has to change at exactly 12:00 EST today. I wonder if a hacker can't get in and fuck up the transition. It'd be pretty difficult wouldn't it?
House of Leaves
I believe that it may have been discussed before, but when has a book not been discussed multiple times on the Shack? First off, here is a trailer that starts with the opening paragraph in the book and ends with the Dedication in the book: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3C9TxqyXQ8
Of course, this trailer is fan made, but it does a decent job at showing the jarring nature of the work, even if the images don't correlate well to the novel. There is also the official soundtrack to the novel, recorded by the author's sister, Poe. One song even made the radio (and the 'lyrics' are actually a segment of the book), though there's not a good link to it at the moment... damn you YouTube.
Now then, the book. First off, it covers a wide range of ground. If you have a background in Greek Mythology, Science, Architecture, Cinematography, Exploration, Christian Mythology, and Literature you can really enjoy the book. If you are interested in reading about such things, it is still great.
The topics don't just bounce around either. You are actually reading a book written by one man detailing an event that had happened. However, that man never published his work before he died, so another man (Johnny Truant) came along and started to compile all of the notes together. Johnny felt the need to comment on the story as it was happening, as well as detail his own life experiences as he worked through the notes. So now we have two stories going on. However, the book is also edited by another group of editors who found Johnny's work. It starts to get crazy, but it is beautifully woven together.
Lastly, the book asks the reader to physically take part in the psychological horrors that are going on. We are asked to pause and imagine certain details, and we are also forced to slow down as the
text becomes dis-
jointed.
Sometimesitisreallycrammedtogethereven.
It's really a fascinating work and I dream of the day that I can teach a class using only that book as the primary source, while reading other works that are treated as secondary sources. It'd be incredibly rad.
Anyway, if you haven't read the book yet, you should. I love Shakespeare, Stevenson, Palahniuk, Chaucer, Gibson, Simmons, Brust, and Pratchett, but none of those writers have created a single work that compares to the brilliance of House of Leaves.
