Nintendo Claims Responsibility for 99% of Industry Growth in 2008
by Chris Faylor, Jan 16, 2009 11:18am PSTYesterday, sales-tracking firm NPD Group announced that the United States console market grew by 19% in 2008, resulting in a new record revenue of $21.33 billion.
Now, Nintendo has stepped into the picture, claiming that its software, hardware and accesories were "responsible for 99% of those additional retail dollars."
Of the year's ten best-selling games, five were published and developed by Nintendo. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Wii accounted for 55% of all home console sales during 2008, selling more than 10 million units and more than doubling its install base.
As for the Nintendo DS, the device made up a whopping 72% of all portable sales in 2008, selling 9.5 million and bringing its U.S. install base to a staggering 27.60 million.

One thing I note that nobody else seems to, is that if casual gaming is 'on the way up' and 'hardcore gaming is where it's at', why is the Wii and DS and Sony LIVE and 360 Arcade are doing so well on the consoles, and GOG.com, 5 million DOSBox downloads and Stardock/indies are doing so well on PC?
Seems to me a revolution is taking place again high end graphic, shallow AAA hardcore gaming and people are looking for gameplay which is only available from older games whether 8 bit/16 bit console games, PS2 still almost selling as many as PS3, or DOS PC games.
I mean, I don't hear talk of Wii price cuts, but I do for 360 and PS3. Used to be price cuts meant a new machine was on the way, but this time we have the cuts with no new consoles due.

I wish it played DVDs since I'll probably keep it on the back room TV.
What are people buying Wiis for? Surely not everyone can be playing Wii Fit or Wii Sports... O_O
(Like many older gamers I haven't played anything on the Wii for several months now)
