Big Left 4 Dead Patch Released, Valve Says "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em"
by Nick Breckon, Jan 14, 2009 6:12pm PSTA major update to Valve's zombie shooter Left 4 Dead was released for the PC version of the game tonight, with an Xbox 360 patch expected "in the coming weeks."
The patch addresses a variety of bugs and exploits, and also includes a few balancing tweaks to the game's Infected classes.
In particular, fans of the Smoker class in Versus mode will be pleased to note that Valve has apparently buffed its attacks, increasing the effectiveness and damage of its tongue ability.
The full patch notes follow:
General
- Fixed Survivors being able to climb surfaces marked for versus infected only.
- Fixed a class of SurvivorBot bugs dealing with rescuing downed players.
- Players can no longer grab ladders while flying through the air after a Tank punch.
- Shooting near a car with an alarm that has already fired the alarm will no longer make chirping noises.
- Improved loading time.
- Fixed mini-gun physics exploit.
- Fixed propane tanks (and other physics objects) causing players to fall through elevators.
- Fixed rare achievement bug issues.
- Fixed several map exploits.
- Fixed various match making issues.
- Fixed NAT traversal issues.
Versus Changes
- Added HUD elements to show status of other infected players.
- Changed color of infected player name in chat to red.
- Fixed exploit where players could spawn infected bots
- Fixed instance where a Survivor changing to the infected team would be attacked by infected bots.
- Normalized special infected melee damage.
- Made the following client commands cheat protected: "Kill" and "explode".
- Fixed exploit where infected players could run away and teleport back to gain health.
- Players can only change teams once per map.
- Players can't change teams while other players are still loading.
- Tank spawns at the same % through the map for both teams in versus mode.
- Made the Tank and Witch spawn directly on the escape route.
- Increased chance of getting the Tank or Witch.
- Fixed team swap issue.
Hunter
- Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing.
- Increased Minimum damage a Hunter pounce does.
Smoker
- Fixed Smoker tongue tolerance.
- Smoker now has to be killed or the tongue destroyed for the tongue to break.
- Survivor's cannot bash someone off the tongue until the Survivor being pulled is paralyzed or hanging
- Tongue attacks that fail to paralyze or hang a Survivor will use the shorter ability delay timer.
- Fixed cases where the ability timer was not using the correct time.
- Fixed case where you could point at a Survivor but not register a tongue hit
- Fixed Smoker tongue not targeting and landing properly through PZ ghosts.
- Smoker tongue does damage every second while dragging paralyzed Survivors.
Tank
- Bashable objects now appear with a red glow.
- Tanks hitting a car with an alarm disables the alarm permanently.
- Tank frustration timer is only reset by hitting Survivors with rocks or fists.
- Reduced autoshotgun damage against Tanks.
Witch
- Witch spawns at the same % through the map for both teams.
- Avoids spawning within a certain % of the tank.
- Fixed an exploit where the Witch could be woken up and tricked into attacking Survivors.

In other words if your team was really good, moving through a level quickly, and taking little damage, you'd be more likely to face a Tank. Where as if your team is really bloodied and maybe you've lost a team member already, you won't even face a Tank.
Why are they removing a significant aspect of the AI Director's ability to help balance the adventure?

I have seen two solid solutions for this...
A) Have one of the Infected team members start the match as a ghost tank, and be able to move the tank spawn point to where they want it. Do this while the Survivors are in the safe room, maybe giving the Infected a few seconds time before the safe room door can be opened... -Zyrekeb
B) Have one of the Infected team members start the match with the ability to become the tank at any time. They can use the ability any time they want by pressing a button, and when they use it it will spawn the Tank as it would any other Infected, with a ghost that needs to be out of sight... -Wisp!
I am really against the whole 'team 1 and team 2 flipping 1st and 2nd' thing, because the second team is still always at an advantage, which makes for a an unfun gaming experience. The other two options really add a strategic and fun element to the tank, and make each map as fair as possible.
I really suggest people start getting intouch with Valve about these two ideas...

I don't know why people take a game so seriously. It's fucking killing zombies. I just want to play to let off some steam or play on expert for a challenge, without this kick drama.

Smoker changes are welcome as well. As someone that excels at being a Smoker, it's very frustrating to pull someone a long way and not have them take much/any damage.

Seems like a strange decision. I just don't get why'd they make it so you can knock someone free when they're paralyzed or hanging but not in any other situation.
On the other hand I love the idea of being able to shoot at the tongue to set them free.

We usually get a tank on every stage... and more than likely we will get them 30s of starting a map. This shit needed to be reduced... not increased.
My friends believe that tanks ruin this game, not help it. We don't even like it when we're infected and we get a tank. It should be a balancing mechanism to help even the score, not something you both get...

They didn't fix the dangling 2mm from the ground bug or the previous chat messages not displaying.
Other than that good work.
I guess the built in browser doesn't support some ajax/javascript calls.. I couldn't post from it.

Too bad about the earlier reported Snowballing Patch issue, as opposed to Valve releases these fixes sooner and more frequently.
