PlayStation 2 Sells 50 Million Units in North America

18
Eight years, three months and thirteen days after the system debuted in North America, Sony today revealed that the PlayStation 2 has sold over 50 million units in the territory, surpassing the "mid-30 million" sales of the original PlayStation.

Despite a lagging software lineup compared to more recent systems, Sony is still confident in the console, with hardware marketing director John Koller telling Gamasutra that "the PS2 is not going away anytime soon" due to its 2009-10 lineup.

The system now has over 1800 games in North America, with at least 130 of them arriving across the past year. Koller did not specify any upcoming key games, though the system will see a variety of sports games, movie tie-ins, and more Guitar Hero.

As for the system's price, Sony seems to be rather content with the existing $129.99 price point, with Koller claiming that the company is "comfortable with the current price."

god I hate the controller, it's a huge factor in my not owning a PS3 or playing on my PS2 anymore.

Seriously? I actually bought adapters so that I can play my Dreamcast, Xbox, and even PC with PS2 controllers.

I used to agree with you about the Dual Shock (+ DS2, SIXAXIS, DS3) but I think the 360 controller has eclipsed it in every way for modern games. Shame about them gross titties d-pads though.

It's my belief that a controller can't have even one glaring deficiency if it's going to "own all". The 360's d-pad will prevent it from ever being top dog. It doesn't matter that a very slim portion of games even require the d-pad for extended use during gameplay. It's horrible. Everyone, even Microsoft, knows that.

I maintain that it's the best controller for its time period. For many people, the move to analog control in games made the Dual Shock uncomfortable for long periods of time, and then as modern games shifted towards shooters the triggers of the 360 are far superior to Sony's mushy analog shoulder pads.

The 6 button Mega Drive pad was the best controller ever.

True that! Although not many people would agree. PS is one of the worst.

        The PS2/PS3 controllers are awful.

The N64 has/had the best controller ever. (Awaits insults)

It all depends on taste, I like the 360 a lot better than the PS2, controller, games, etc. It isn't a fight.

      As for my justification..

The DC is often suggested as supreme console ruler for the high ratio of great games it produced, and because of the innovations it brought to market. It's hard to argue against this, but it just didn't have the staying power. Hardcore Dreamcast fans are just that - hardcore. The console never had public mindshare. And only deviants like the controller.

The SNES also gets brought up a lot in these discussions, and again at first it's hard to argue against. But I think that if you remove nostalgia, and look at aspects other than beloved games, it's harder to defend it as overall best. It never really dominated globally, despite eventually being (I believe) the biggest seller of the 16-bit generation, and again didn't achieve anywhere near the same recognition as the PS2. Games were often very expensive.

Look at the staying power of the PS2. 8 years is an amazingly long time. Look at the variety of games available, games like DDR and Rock Band through traditional games in every genre - there's something for everyone. Absolute domination in every territory. And then you have the ability to play just about every game for the PS1, the console that dominated the previous generation too.
