Evening Reading

Catching up on some of the games that flew under my radar last quarter. Really glad that I went back and picked up Dead Space--it's a surprisingly scary game, and it's paced pretty well. I get the sense it was one of the many unfortunate titles that got lost in the holiday shuffle, so if you are in my boat, definitely think about giving it a second chance.

The news today:

So after paying 10 bucks and busting out / dusting off the old joystick, I've learned... IL-2 is really hard. =(

Yeah contrary to popular belief they just don't let any asshole fly a plane for the army, you've got to be a really good asshole.

well IL-2 is even harder than most flight sims because you have to know when to press buttons that change things like oil pressure so that you don't stall and it's all different per plane.

I've played a lot of IL2 at full real and I never had to muck about with oil pressure. But then I did all my flying below 10k. Now, prop pitch and radiator settings - well, that's another story.

I seem to recall landing to be unrealistically difficult in that game

i bet landing is pretty difficult in real life

I think it was super duper hard in this game, so much so that you didn't need to land, they had a "end mission" button or something.
I could be remembering wrong, or maybe my computer was underpowered at the time or something.

I've landed a bunch of planes in IL2 and I suck at flight sims so it can't be that difficult.

You just slow down until you touch the ground! Easy!

No... the trick is to think the whole freaking planet is landing on you... not you on the planet. Never fails.

Would a 360 controller play ok with this game?

i tried playing with a gamepad and never successfully took off. always rolled over and ate dirt. too difficult for me to enjoy unfortunately. sounded great.

Did you drop your flaps? Did you keep it on the runway?

iirc, it was almost immediately after getting airborne. i tried trying different things with the flaps, taking off sooner, later etc. but nothing seemed to help. I decided to blame it on the gamepad (which is old and has been a problem in other games) since i wasn't feeling that motivated to dive deep into guides and such.

The way you guys talk about IL2, it's like I'm watching a dozen Papaboos talk about Half-Life. You guys without joysticks may as well deathmatch with your hand on the arrow keys. Stick with it, though, and you'll figure it out. I've played everything under the sun and no multiplayer kill satisfies like "Enemy Aircraft Destroyed".

I bought it during the holiday sale and you guys are making me want to fire it up for the first time. I really should finish one of the other 4 or so games I have going though. =(

This thread makes me want to see if that flying fortress game is on steam or the like. Anybody know?
