Ok, I don't get it. Why the large disparity between the number of WoW subscribers and number of copies of expansions sold?

(lifted from Wikipedia, so accuracy is questionable, but let's presume the numbers are ballpark...)

    # World of Warcraft (11.5 million subscribers)[214]

    * World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade [expansion pack] (3.5 million)[215]
    * World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King [expansion pack] (4 million)[214]

you can buy it online from blizzard which probably doesn't count towards the sales

This. Borrow media from a friend or download it and then you just send Blizzard some money and they upgrade your account. No fuzz with going to the store or entering cd-keys. Those numbers are definitively not included in those numbers you got there.

You get to download the game using bittorrent totally officially when you buy it online.

I think the TBC and WOTLK numbers are just for the first month at reatilers.

Those numbers were only accurate as of a few months after each expansion's release. Blizzard just doesn't bother releasing their latest numbers because everyone already knows they're huge.

The Battle Chest probably screws with the numbers too.
