Rumor: Tomb Raider Dev Cuts 30 Employees Following 'Disappointing' Sales

Tomb Raider: Underworld developer Crystal Dynamics today slashed 30 employees from its workforce, according to a Kotaku report citing "reliable sources."

The layoffs were supposedly carried out across the breadth of the company.

Crystal Dynamics owner Eidos earlier today expressed disappointment in the sales of Underworld, which has moved 1.5 million copies worldwide since its release--apparently a figure that did not meet Eidos' internal projects.

The demo wasn't that good.

Hi-qualy graphics, but very weak gameflow at times, and weak fight system.
Poor weapon sounds, easy, childish, ugly trigers or lions to kill as enemies.

That is usually not what most players like.

If they are blowing through over 50 million dollars a year then they are doing something wrong.

1.5 million copies is ~90 million dollars in sales.

I think a lot of people, including me, just found there were too many games released in a short space of time. Normally i can buy every game i want during the xmas releases, but this year i had to make a few cuts which, unfortunatley, included Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia and Mirrors Ege. I'm still going to buy these games in a couple of months, but developers can't expect everyone to buy all 9 or 10 big releases in the space of one month during an economic crisis.

IT'S THEIR FAULT for releasing so much so quick! there's NO DEMAND FOR IT! this goes for tomb raider series, this goes for PRINCE OF PERSIA!

why do these guys feel like they can chump out game after game, year after year and then bitch and moan about how people aren't buying?!?!?!

they want to sell these properties like 2kX sports series one a year and they think they can make good money on that? people get bored and tired of these kinds of things and they, more than any should be able to look at their numbers and reign it back.

If 1.5M sales isn't enough, to me that's a hint that: 1. Some of the hands reaching into gross revenue need to be removed, and 2. Development costs need to be cut. If your market is limited to 1.5M - and let's be honest, that's a more than decent number - there's only so much you can spend and make a profit.

This is really a shame. I just (10mins ago) finished the game on Xbox360 and it's one of the best Tomb Raider games ever made, I dare even say (if you like the genre) one of the better games of 2008.

Why didn't they just lay off the one or two people who milked the franchise so badly and thought it was a good idea? A Tomb Raider game would be exciting every three or four years or so but the amount of them makes them a skip for most people

After TR:Anniversary and Legend they should have held off on another TR game for atleast a year and they should've known better than to releasethe game in the midst of the holiday release schedule. TR is a decent franchise but there were so many newer, less 'tired' franchise releasing games there was no way TR would be as big a hit as they'd hoped.
