Jesus fucking Christ the game is long. I know we've done a lot of complaining here over the last year or two about short games, but there's a difference between having enough content to fill out a 10 or 15 hour game, and just having mindless quest after mindless quest to drag the damn thing out. I mean, you get sent on so many quests to repair so many fucking systems on the goddamn ship that you pretty much rebuild it from the ground up. (I'm having the same problem with the new Prince of Persia. I'm somewhere around 550 of the 1000 fucking Light Seeds and this shit is becoming tedious.)
Two, I know the developer made a conscious decision to make the game claustrophobic, but really, your character was too damn close in the third person view. Also, he was offset to the left far too much. It made aiming VERY cumbersome as your targeting reticle was off-set from where your character was actually pointed. Trying to sight down the line of the weapon or the character was different from the angle of the actual reticle.
Third, movement and aiming were both written for console controllers and are thus incredibly sluggish. I felt like I was fighting the controls more than I was fighting the enemies.
Finally, I really admire their attempts at building a great cohesive plot, but really, it was a mishmash riddled with plotholes. Huge gaping goatse-sized potholes.
Finally, the difficulty is pretty harsh on the higher levels. I did a count off a strategy guide and found that there are 36 (IIRC) power nodes to upgrade your weapons and equipment in the game. There are also probably half a dozen or so doors in the game that require a power node. That leaves enough to significantly upgrade two, maybe three, weapons on a single playthrough. That's not nearly enough, and REALLY cripples you on the hardest difficulties.
As far as the good stuff goes....the voice acting was pretty good. While I listed the plot as a negative, I'll also say that it was really nice to see them try so hard, even if they did crib half of the story from Event Horizon. Most games don't bother to even do that much. The graphics and load times are great too. I have no idea how they managed to get the game to load that quickly.
(Incidentally, as a QA professional, I feel it necessary to mention that they fucked up the exit game dialogue. When you choose to exit to the menu, the confirmation dialogue says "cancel" and "continue". In every game I have ever played, going back to arcade games in the '80s, "continue" has meant you wish to continue playing the game. In this case, "continue" means continue quitting the game. That's ass-fucking-backwards.)
Anyway, in the end, I give the game a solid recommendation. There are some good ideas coupled with largely solid execution in the game, assuming you have the patience to keep playing it.
