Sony Slams Xbox 360, Wii as 'Peddling Add-ons'

PlayStation 3 maker Sony has thrown the latest ball of mud in the console war, claiming that competitors Microsoft and Nintendo are merely "peddling add-ons" to keep up.

While Sony said that "the Xbox 360 and Wii offer a set of features in their own right," the company provided the above chart, stressing that "when you take a look at the feature offerings side by side, there is only one true winner in delivering total value and price."

The chart compares the lowest-priced offering from each manufacturer. Two other Xbox 360 models are available--the $299 60GB Pro, and the $399 120GB Elite--with a $499 PS3 packing a 160GB hard drive. Curiously, Sony did not discuss game lineups, which some consider to be a major factor in the purchase of a video game console.

With the holidays now behind them, the PlayStation 3 has sold roughly 20 million units worldwide since launch, while Microsoft says the Xbox 360 now tops 28 million. Before the holiday season kicked off, Nintendo's Wii had sold about 35 million units.

In its mailing to the press, Sony concluded:

The PS3 is the perfect example of a product featuring superior technology and a sophisticated design creating an ideal all-in-one entertainment product. The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and adds clutter to the entertainment center. And the Wii's lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution. So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones'.

  • How these apples...this is my set-up

Xbox arcade- 199 +tax(old box died so i had 20gig drive don't need to buy a Pro)
120GB HDD- (bought used at gamestop but it's 120 without discounts)
HDMI cable-gamestop used...19 fucking 99...who the fuck is gonna spend 50 bucks on a cable? not me.

    total cost= 340 including tax.

Sony is aiming towards 'home' entertainment instead of the 'gaming' industry like Nintendo is. The reason the Wii is selling like a DVD player back in the day is because it's a trend to have it. Only guys with lots of blu movies I can understand why they have the PS3. I know guys that have both systems and prefer their 360 over their PS3 because of the GAME SELECTION. The online I know sucks on PS3 and paying for live is no different than paying Blizzard for server use on WoW. Besides if it was hard-ware issue PS3 has shit for everything. I would rather trust MS on PC parts than Sony because it does home entertainment NOT gaming. I could care less for format to be honest and I believe (though not sure of) it's harder to code on the BluRay than it is HDDVD. Do i care that a bluray disc can't be scratched unless your really REALLY try...i have seen some destroyed before...not really. It just gives you an excuse to be more careless with your disc. I believe 'true' gamers would not allow such things to befall their disc.

And lets acount the in the on-board stuff for PS3. Ok wireless, pretty cool, just like a laptop, when it breaks it breaks, it needs patches out the ass to keep it going and you can't just pop it off and put a new one on when it breaks. And it also makes the PS3 the weight of a small child...does it need to weight the same weight as my desktop? I believe not. I think Sony is really trying to get their shit together. I believe they are just sitting in the ps2 sucess sunlight oblivious to the fact that the PS3 is starting to be a failing system. And keeping up with the Jones? I believe that the PS3 was "rushed" out of production to keep up with MS. Not being a fanboy cause I would stop console gaming in a heartbeat for PC gaming but I'm looking at this from a logical view point.

If Sony wants to sell the PS3, they need to get out the PS2 success sunlight and start aiming towards the gamers instead of Sony fanboys.

  • personally Im a PC gamer, but my buddy got a PS3 and ended up paying about 500-600 dollars for the original backwards compatible 80 gig HD PS3. And so far he has only found one game worth buying and its the non exclusive Call of Duty 4. He went in and sprung for 3 extra controllers at about $50 bones a pop.. Oh and it didn't come with the Hi Def hookups for his TV and he isn't terribly savy so he paid about 35 bones for the correct inputs.. So while PS3 supports these things they nickle and dime your ass to get it all up and running.. And to add to it, the backwards compatibility isn't all its cracked up to be.. Most 4player split screen games only support the first controller so your out of luck. I realize split screen gaming is becoming less relevant but some people still like to play this way. And as a big Sony advocate and owner of both the PSOne and PS2 (much love) disappointed doesn't describe my feelings toward Sony's current lineup... And since the Wii is nothing but shovelware I don't know how anyone can see the xbox 360 as the clear machine to own for games.. The Wii sales but whos playing besides you little sister and grandpa.
