Morning Discussion
by Chris Faylor, Jan 08, 2009 4:45am PSTWhat's this? A new chatty, right on time? Maybe you could learn something, Gibson.
Then again, I probably shouldn't be too harsh on the old man. He's been keeping this site--back then, it was Quakeholio--going since I was in fifth grade. That's dedication.
And in the interest of full disclosure, I'll admit to slightly fudging the time stamp on this one. This is being posted at 9:14 AM CST--which is around the usual posting time!--but it's timed earlier as to not interfere with the news Maarten already posted today.
Chatty: Diablo III, Dragon's Dogma
FileShack: Unity of Command, Skyjacker
Daily Filter: Planetside 2, Deadlight
Weekend PC digital deals: strategy-o-rama
38 Studios, Harry Potter Kinect - Shacknews Daily: May 25, 2012
This is your life shackers, enjoy it.

GeForce 3D Vision.
Looks like the fucked it up though. They set the price point at $199. So you need these glasses in addition to a 120hz monitor. WTF were they thinking? I was really excited about this tech until they said the price. There is no way it is going to catch on at that price point. If they set the price point at $100 it might have caught on a little, but at $200 it is just destine to fail.
It sounds like there might be other 3D tech coming out though; a guess there are bunch of 3D monitors being showed at CES this year; I'm curious as to how well they work.

Big news today for people who like early access to features. We just pushed a trunk build for the first time in months. This has tons of crap in it. You will want to have its babies.
IMPORTANT, READ THIS
You will NOT automatically get this release EVEN IF YOU WERE ON THE DEV CHANNEL. YOU ARE NOT ON THE DEV CHANNEL ANYMORE. Why? Because our "dev" releases are going to be a bit more rocky and so we've changed our old pair of channels (dev, beta) into three (dev, beta, stable), and moved everyone on "beta" (who probably were just normal Chrome users) onto "stable", and everyone on "dev" (who were probably "beta tester" types) onto "beta". More about this at http://blog.chromium.org/2009/01/google-chrome-release-channels.html .
Now, if you still really want bleeding-edge stuff, you can get back on the dev channel. A new and improved channel changer app is linked off http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel . Go there and subscribe to the dev channel. You'll get roughly weekly trunk releases. If you were on dev (and thus are now on beta) and do nothing, you'll probably get new stuff once a monthish. Stable folks will get things maybe once a quarter.
OK, that said, what have we done? We dropped a new release (2.0.156.1) on the dev channel. Announcement at http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2009/01/dev-update-new-webkit-version-new.html . Full release notes at http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel/release-notes/releasenotes201561 (which doesn't contain anything like a full set of changes, because there are hundreds), but some highlights are:
* Basic form autofill (to the level of Firefox, i.e. we remember past values; no Roboform or Google Toolbar type capabilities yet)
* Crappy full page zoom
* Crappy middle mouse autoscroll
* Crappy multiple profile support
* Crappy Greasemonkey support
* Acid3 at ~100% (but not fully passing yet)
* Goofy UI for snapping/docking windows (does not do as much as you'd hope from reading that sentence)
* Spellcheck improvements, especially for multi-lingual users: You can right-click and particular field and turn spellchecking on/off or change languages
* Doesn't hose your disk as much
* Play much more nicely with window managers (supports tiling, for example)
So, if this sounds like good stuff to you, go get the new channel changer, get on the new dev channel, update and enjoy. And then rip your hair out at the crazy bugs and regressions we have on the trunk. HA HA! SUCKER!

But I already submitted notice of my resignation last month. My last day is Feb. 13. Short-timers has a stranglehold, and wasting my time on the internet should be how I spend most of my day. I mean, seriously, would any of you actually take on an extra workload with five weeks left?

Well those people can just fuck right off. Mötley Crüe's Home Sweet Home is just off the fucking hook. I was playing it in iTunes, I clicked the Genius button and it just added it to the playlist 25 times.
Every rose has its thorn, I'll Be There for You, November fucking Rain, Sister Christian, When it's love ...
So, what was the last great Rock Ballad? Ok, I guess you can call it a Power Ballad but I'll still call it a Rock Ballad because it does rock.

I'm going to be reading a few chapters on memory management for ObjC shortly, but I have a quick question.
Lets say I have a Texture2D *texture = [[Texture2D alloc] init]; I would only need to [texture release]; when I no longer need the texture? (IE: if i were to change the texture associated with it, i wouldn't have to release and then retain the new one?)
I guess it would be better illistrated with a string... if i change the string i wouldn't need to release and make a new string instance right?

So I'm thinking of finally picking up an HDTV. I think I've narrowed down my choices to two. One is a 32" Sharp (AQUOS LC-32DS1), and the other is a 37" Toshiba (REGZA 37C7000). I live in Japan, so Samsungs aren't really around so much. Both are about the same price and both are full HD, but the Sharp has a higher contrast ratio (2000:1 v 1300:1). I live in a pretty small apartment, so don't tell me I should stop being a pussy and get a 50".

I feel bad for their family, but WTF.
Sure an aerospace engineer would have some understanding of dynamic systems, but no, he and his bro ignored safety barriers and played chicken with a glacier

I found http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1453&Itemid=38 which is a little old but it says the Thermalright goo is better goo. But this quote surprised me: "Reminder: To achieve best result and maintain proper heat conduct, be sure to clean your heatsink often and clean aging thermal compound off CPU to re-apply Chill Factor every 12 month."
What the fuck is that shit?
Is it bad form to ask my current team lead to be a professional reference for me? I know the guy pretty well and am confident he would do it for me, but it seems like it could possibly pose a conflict of interest situation between him, my manager, and the company. But I guess no one else has to know yea?
